lets say you have 4 digits, how many combinations can you have.

I was thinking 9999 maybe plus 1 if you start at zero.

never mind, i just won, 10*10*10*10 for 10,000
starting like a phone number at 0000 up to 9999. :)

I won a stupid office argument. a phone number came up and the last 4 digits was 0000 and the guy said that was like one in a million. I said every pre fix has one and not as rare and he though.

They attempted to argue me how many combinations there were in the last 4 digits and I said 10,000.

I had just in my mind thought like 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003, and that when you get to 9999 you have hit every possible combination and they didnt' believe it. So it turned into an arguement and one said to find out how many possible combination you would take 1000 X 1000 and get a million then tried to argue in those 4 digits their was a million combinations.

Finally they saw I would not give up and they quit trying to argue, about 10 minutes later he thought it though and realized I was correct.

it used to be that 0000 was never given out....with the explosion of phone lines and cell phones....it is now in the rotation....just like the 555 exchange was reserved for the phone company, you are starting to see #'s like that now.

Actually it depends on what 4 digits you are using.

Now if you are talking 4 positions using digits 0 thru 9 then the answer is 10,000.

This only works if you take it for granted he was talking about 0-9. Now, let's suppose it was in hex.

true, however in this case it was 0-9

If it was say letters A-Z

then it would be 26X26X26X26=456976
