Supra Express vs. USR

Never dreamed I'd make a post such as this. After 2 weeks of using a new USR V92 external, I'm convinced it kicks all of my Supras across the barnyard. Even though it's using v90 with the ISP(backward compatible modem), it simply smokes the others. I hate to reclassify all of my Express' as "backups", but .......

Hmmm for me I'd have to say the Supra Express has been better than the USR modems I've used..but then again those have been win modems, and all internal too. I used a Lucent modem the other day though to connect to my ISP (was fixing a friend's system) and wow...that think was fast, always connected at 49,333 bps, and download spees were in the 5-7k range, while the Supra gets about 5k...interesting.

Floppy, the Supras do outperform my other USR's. I was very surprised (pleasantly) though with this one.

Maybe your ISP's using 3Com/USR equipment too?

I really like Supras too - but the only way you will get my USR 5687 away from me is to pry it out of my cold dead fingers......

If you have a decent phone line, you can't beat the Supra Express - but on crappy lines like mine, the USR is the best, as long as it's a hardware Sportster or Courier. My initial connect speed is slower with the USR, but it trains up and sustains good download speeds like no other modem I have tried.

Interesting you should say that about 3Com equipment, flop - when my previous ISP went to 3Com from Ascend, my performance went down the toilet with the USR modem. My current ISP is using Cisco, and the Sportster blows away the Supra I tried.

I had the same thing. From several locations, the ISP I worked for used 3Com TC racks, and I had both an external Sportster and a Supra ISA. At each location the Supra was faster.

The only consideration was at my folks' house out in the boonies. The Supra was a bit faster at first out there, but not as stable. The USR did maintain a connection much better on their shotty lines.

I've heard about this fancy new USR V.92, so I just had to try one. Three different ISP's, all local, all V.90 compliant.
Testing results:
The USR does work better than the Supra external.
Caveat: The Supra kicks butt on ISP's that use USR TC racks (with S202=32), and Livingston PM racks (no extra string). The USR kicks butt on Cisco...go figure...

It's obvious when using Hyperterminal when connecting to certain ones. Ascend and 3Comm usually indicate such. How can you tell the others?

Sarge - my dialup provider uses Navipath and PSI pop's - and Navipath uses Cisco (their website has the "powered by Cisco " logo). I don't know what PSI is using but it sucks in comparison. Navipath works great.

Dok and I were talking on AIM one day trying to track down a board spammer, and he noticed that you use the same IP block as I do - so that tells me that your ISP uses Navipath. That's why the USR blows away the Supra - you are on a Cisco terminal.

OK - every time we post, our IP is logged. Dok was checking regular posters' IP's to make sure we weren't going to be blocking anyone else with a ban on the offender's IP range.
