An original thought-but so obvious its probably been in every magazine and site.
Take a matchstick or toothpick etc and tightly wrap the tip with some scotch tape, masking tape , band aid etc with the sticky side out.
Use it to remove crud from the rollers.

Mmmm, not bad. But I'm using an optical mouse, so no more troubles for me

I typically use a paper clip and a pair of tweezers on my rollers. Seems to work fairly well. Maybe someday I can get a female mouse and not have to worry about it any more.

I usually use Q-Tips dipped in rubbing alcohol to get the crud off of the rollers and wash the ball with soap and water.

Those days are behind me now. I just got my Logitech cordless optical and it's the best of both worlds. Time will tell on the battery life though. They claim 2-3 months.
