I recently upgraded from Windows ME to XP on a Dell pentiun II. I currently have a floppy, two hard drives, a new 56X cd-rom and a DVD.

After the update I could not see either of the CDs in "My computer". The PC recognizes that the CDs are there during boot up. And, I can see the drives under "Device Manager" but they have a "!" to the left.

The trouble shooter routine tells me to uninstall the drives and reinstall them. I have done this several times. I even uninstalled the IDE controller and reinstalled it. I also installed a new CD-ROM just to see if it was the equipment.

I am a computer dummy. So, this is about as far as I can go on my own.

Help please

How to troubleshoot CD-ROM drive problems in Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314096&Product=winxp)

CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive appears to be missing after you install Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320553&Product=winxp)

I recently had the same thing happen. Couldn't figure it out... tried everything possible, drives worked in other computers. What I finally checked was the CD drive settings. Both my drives were set at CSL "cable select", I made one Master and the other Slave and rebooted. All drives worked immediately, including the floppy and the usb ports. Very strange, since this is the way the computer was shipped and was never changed...

Hope this helps.

I'm still stumped. I checked the XP compatiblity list. The new CD-Rom is on the list as built for Windows XP as is the IDE controller. the DVD isn't listed.

I went to the regedit and found that there is no upper or lower limit to delete.

The disk pins were set at master and slave, so I changed to select and then back again. No change.
