Another SATA Problem (sorry guys!)

HI,

I have had a search through previous posts, but keep going round in circles.

Last night I started and finished my first build! But I have a couple of problems, I intended to have a single 160GB WD SATA HD, but due to me having problems installing Windows XP on the SATA, I took my old 40GB IDE HD and re-formatted and installed XP on there.

Now, I still have my SATA connected (SATA 1 on Asus k8v deluxe mobo) but can't get access to it in Windows. Going through device manager it is listed, but when it comes to My Computer it won't appear. Also I tried this morning installing XP again on the SATA, pressed F6 during install, loaded SATA driver and when it comes to selecting which HD to install XP on, it shows my SATA but say's windows can't access it.

Can someone please help?

You'll have to format the drive first.

I can't format it, when I get to the computer management console, the SATA is not listed there for me to format...is there something else I should be doing to format the drive?

Did you load the mobo SATA drivers that came on the mobo CD?

Yes I've loaded up the drivers from the Mobo CD and I've used Disk Management. The HD is displayed in device manager under disk drives, but in computer manager it doesnt appear under disk management?

In disk management, have you tried action, rescan disks?

Yeah I have tried rescan disks - no luck.

I also tried taking out my SATA power connection and hooking it up with a standard power connector. Then when I booted up, the disk started making a few clicking sounds. I am now sending this back to the retailer and they are going to have a look at it to see if anything is faulty - hopefully sending me out another one. In the meantime thanks for your tips so far, I may be back once I get my HD (or a new one0) back!

Have you tried this?

Right-Click on "My Computer"
Select "Manage" from the menu
Select "Disk Management" from the list
You should see your SATA drive in the list. You will first need to set up partitions before you can format.
Right-Click on the SATA drive and select "Make Partition" (I think that is the menu choice... Mine is already set up, so the option doesn't appear in the list any longer, so I am going by memory...)

I have my 160GB drive actually set up with 3 partitions, but it depends on how you want to use it

It will now step you through a wizard to make the drive partitions. Once the partitions are made, you can format them and they should appear in Windows for you to use.

It's been a while since I installed my 160GB SATA, but my setup is very similar to yours. I have a 40GB as my OS drive, and then the 160GB is divided for games, apps, and my multi-media stuff...

Yes I have tried that, but the SATA drive wasn't listed in the disk management section, only in the device manager. So I couldn't get access to it, I have just received confirmation from my supplier that there was a fault with the HD and I am being sent a replacement.

Thanks for the tips, hopefully i won't need to post on this thread again if all goes well with my replacement...thanks for now!

Hi,

Just an update, my replacement drive came today, went home and everything worked :)

Just as a guide to anyone else trying to install a SATA HD on a Asus K8V SE-Deluxe, here is what I did :

- Unplug any IDE Hard-drives.

- Plug the SATA HD into the SATA 1 port on the Motherboard (Instead of SATA 2).

- Start up your PC and go into the bios and ensure that the primary boot disk is set as your CD-ROM, that any RAID Boot options are disabled and that the SATA BOOT ROM option is enabled.

- Restart your PC, then it should boot from your Windows installation CD, and keep a look out at the text bar at the bottom of the screen for when it says "press f6 to load extra drivers" (or something similar). Press F6 and then press s to "specify other devices" and it will ask you to enter your floppy disk with SATA drivers in (made by the makedisk.exe file on the ASUS motherboard CD).

- Load the drivers and then you will be taken to the windows license agreement, press f8 to accept and you will then be asked to specify a partition/drive to install windows on, your SATA drive should be shown, press "c" to create a new partition and format the HD.

- Windows should then start to install as normal.

By the way, this is assuming you are doing a fresh install of windows onto your SATA hard drive.

If I have missed anything out or got anything in the wrong order, please add/amend to this.

looks alright. that's only on AMD MoBos. most intel MoBos that use the intel chipsets have native SATA
