Hi all,

I'm currently a junior undergrad college student and plan on going to graduate school (most likely for electrical or computer engineering). This means that I will be taking the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) sometime next summer. I figure now is a good time to start studying for it. Does anyone know of some goods guides/books on the GRE I could buy that could aid me in preparing for this test? Thanks. Also, if anyone has other suggestions/tips for taking this test I'd like to hear them. Thanks in advance for the help guys.

The best preperation for the GRE is to take the test - I took it unprepared and did fairly well. But after I took it, I knew what to expect and how/what to study. The kaplan program isn't too bad, but costs a fortune.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your advice. Are you suggesting I should take it early to get a feel for it and then take it again? I'm pretty sure the vocabulary section on the test is going to "sink" me.

Thats what I did - I didn't even select any schools for the test to be sent to. But once I got the results I knew where my weak areas were - vocab was a big one for me. As I recall, I took it near the middle of my first semester as a junior. I re-took the exam at the beginning of second semester as a senior - once I knew what my grad school choices had been narrowed down to.

And like I said, I took it without any study prep - that way I knew where I really didn't have to focus my studying.

The princeton Review book is what I used when I studied. It came with a CD Rom with practice exams. I did pretty well on the test. Looking at their website I don't see any books but they do have an online study course.

I've been told by a former Kaplan instructor who was a friend of mine that all Kaplan courses are junk. Definitely not worth the money. I am also of the belief that you just go in and take the darn thing.

Since you are an engineer and have taken many math classes I wouldn't worry about studying too much for the math section. I didn't study at all and scored 790/800 for the math. It is mainly algebra based. The English section killed me, scored 490/800 on that, ouch! That is the section that use science people need to prep for. Go to a library or a bookstore and get the study guides they make. They give you practice questions and tell you what to expect.

What I would give to have that 'problem'! I ace every English portion of *every* exam I take(I rarely even bother to study for the English portions)but math is really my weak area. :(
