error when trying to open excel file.

Im trying to open an excel file I created but when I do now it gives me an error. It tells me " the folder isnt accessible and it may be located on an unavailable volume or protected with a password. I know I didnt put a password on it and I only have a one partition on my pc with no network drives. How can I open this?

Are you logged in to Windows on the same account that you were logged in to when you created it?

No, always use the same computer and am the only user and only account.

wait, scratch that. I remember I actually did do it on somebody elses computer but they sold that computer! is there anything I can do to open it?

As long as you are in an Administrator account (and you should be since you're the only user), you can force it to your own "rights" and be able to open it. For this, you'll have to disable "Simple File Sharing" in the Folder Options (Control Panel). After you have done this, you'll get an extra "Security" tab in the file's Properties. Click on "Add" and type in your user name (the name you see next to "Logoff" in the Start menu). You should now be able to open it.

I have windows 2000 pro and cannot find "simple file sharing" in any of the tabs under folder options under any of the tabs. Did you mean something else or am I just not seeing it?

oh wait, I saw you said I have to be an administrator which Im not at the current computer I am looking at this on so thats problably why. Thanks!

On Windows 2000 you should have the Security tab by default, "Simple Filesharing" is something of XP designed to hide it. Guess I assumed you were running XP, sorry :D So just right click on the file, choose Properties and there should be a Security tab where you can add yourself as owner as long as you're doing this in an Administrator-level account. The default for single user Windows 2000 is normally the Administrator account itself.
