I just bought a DVD burner last week, NEC ND-3500A, but I did not get the software (driver) to install it. My OS (XP) picked up a driver but my DVD burner is not reconize as a writer, only as a reader. Any suggestions, can I get the driver over the net?
Hello and welcome to PC Mech,
there are no drivers for opticals. What do you mean by "Windows recognized it as a reader" ? Isn't the correct model number listed in device manager ?
You just need a burning software, and that's it.

Thanks RJ,
I have NERO as my burning software, but when I try to burn a DVD or a CD I can not pick up the DVD burner. I went to the properties and it is listed as a CD-ROM.
Remove the entry and reboot. Windows will re-detect that drive, and this time it should be detected as the ND-3500A.
What happens when you insert a DVD with data on it ? Can you access the data ?
Which version of Nero do you have ?

I am able access the data when I insert a DVD or CD. I do not remember what version of NERO I am using, I am at work right now so I can't check that version, but I am assuming is pretty new I got it from a friend.

Then it's alright. I don't believe Windows XP lists it as CD-ROM, you probably looked on the wrong place. Look in the device manager. Does it show the correct model there ?

Then I am assuming that you have an illegal version of Nero. Spend a couple bucks and get Nero 6. I believe the version you have does not support the burner.

Thanks again RJ,
I will do that and hopefully that would solve my problem.
