are the opticals in dell's higher end systems (XPS and etc.) standard/ interchangeable or are they unique to dell systems?

i wanna replace my rents cd-rw drive with a dvd-rw drive (more music will fit on a dvd than a cd).

it depends. check to see if they use the normal sockets. if they use universal PATA and the standard 4pin molex connector, ur fine.

They should be interchangeable. The swapping might be a hassle though - be sure that there is an adequate power supply to facilitate the new optical drive going into the new system.

I have never heard of proprietory optical drives. There shouldn't be any problems.

The only proprietary opticals are the ones that fit in a styled case - with no standard bezel. If the drive you want to replace has a standard rectangular bezel covering the whole front of the drive, you can swap it out no problem. Make SURE you set the jumper the same way, Dells usually use Cable Select.

I have a Samsung CD-RW in one Dell and a Lite-On CD in the other.
