RIAA to start using P2P??

That's the message inherent in news that the Big Four record label cartel is trying yet another angle to get around the fact music is being distributed online without its 'help' - that's to say, via the p2p file sharing networks.

The idea? Start a few RIAA-backed p2p applications.


All I have to say is whoa. Does that mean that the users of Kazaa and Limewire and so on have won by sheer numbers?

Now they say it's great? I'm guessing they're just talking about the legal (pay service) P2P apps?

i think that the RIAA has finally realized that p2p is the way to go. they need to use technology to their advantage, rather than fight the impossible

Exactly. This is really no different than what happened with VCRs. When VCRs came out, the MPAA fought it on piracy grounds (sound familiar?). One day, though, they realized that this technology was here to stay, and so they figured out how to make money off of it instead of fighting it: the selling and renting of movies on video tape was born.

Nobody ever wins by eliminating new technology. You have to figure out how to use the technology to make money. With widespread broadband availability, P2P is here to stay.

Problem with that is you may pay for the p2p program only to find out the file your looking for isint on their network.
