Ok, so after some difficulty getting my HDD to be recognized (thx glc) I am now installing win98 se. I use the boot disk and it goes through it's thing and asks me if I want CD rom support (yes) then it goes on to I'm assuming load the drivers for the cd rom, and then it says device driver not found, so it won't continue to load win98. So i'm wondering if it means I have a bunk copy of my start up disk, or it means it cannot see the cd rom drive. On a final note, I did try swapping my cd rom to see if it worked, and no. Any ideas are welcome. Thank you.

you may need to make a new boot floppy

Put a floppy in the drive, go to My Computer, right click floppy, choose format. When in the Format window, check boot disk. This will create a new boot disk.

That would be a little awkward, reading the first post this appears to be a fresh install on a new hard drive.

Fox.. you said in the first post that you couldn't get your hard drive recognized and now your CD is not being recognized?? Is this a mother board chip issue? How did you cure the hard drive fault?

actually i think i just plain suck....glc gave me a link to the WD site which had some "alternate jumper" settings, which fixed my HDD issue. Then my CD Rom wasn't being recognized....to fix that i took my head out of my ass and went into BIOS and enabled secondary IDE (duh) which so far is working well. My new problem is with getting win98 se loaded on. I have the boot disk and the CD for it, so i run the disk then it ends with a "diagnostics tools loaded sucessfully" and then
A:\
and that's it. My cd is in the drive (and it is now recognized) but it doesn't keep going with the install. I'm researching to see if i can find the solution. If you have any ideas they are very welcome. Thank you.

At the A prompt type *:\ where * is the drive letter of your CD drive after that, at the * prompt type SETUP (sometimes SETUP.EXE) and press enter. That should start windows loading automaticaly. If you are using a windows 98 boot disk try putting the utility SMARTDRV on the disk as well and at the A prompt before changing to the CD drive type SMARTDRV.EXE, this is a small utility that speeds up the file transfer during installation.
Google it, it is a free download available all over the place.
