I have a Mat****a CR-594 CD-ROM drive that seems to be on the blink. When I put a disk in, the light comes on for a few seconds, indicating the drive sees a disk. But, after that nothing happens. If I go into My Computer and click on the drive (with a disk in it), I get a message saying "Please insert a disk." So, apparently the drive recognizes when a disk is inserted, but fails to do anything with it. I have tried a number of different disks and get the same result with all of them. XP says the device is working properly, but obviously it isn't. It's not a huge issue to buy a new drive, but I would like to get this one working if possible. Any ideas?

There could be dust in the drive, have you tried cleaning it?

No-other than to try to run one of those lens cleaning thingys. But of course that would not run either...lol. My next step is to take it out of the comp and use a soft bristle paint brush. Maybe I will try the shop vac also.

I wouldn't use a shop vac. That could create static electricity and fry the drive. You could use a shot of compressed air.

Just kidding about the shop vac. I did use a quick blast of air and as best I could, visually inspected the inside of the drive. There was very little dust present. I am going to assume the drive is toast. It is about 3 1/2 years old. I suppose things do wear out. thanks for your help.
