Right before my PIII 500 comp died, the HDD activity light was flashing and the drive was spinning wildly. The mobo was dead after taking everything apart and trying parts.
Could the death have been caused by the HDD, or was the drive activity caused by the mobo kicking the bucket? I don't want to test the drive with my new mobo if it could wreak havoc. That possible?

to my knowledge, it is very unlikely that the hard drive caused the motherboard to go bad, and visa/versa, it is very unusally for them to go bad at the same time, so ots realy a tough one to call, but a glitch in a power suppy can and has done this sort of damage.

So the HDD is probably OK to test in the new board, at any rate?
The PSU is fine, and all voltages are right on, though that's what I thought was the problem at first as well. Guess the mobo crashed and the drive spazzed out as it happened?

When the mobo on my PIII 450 died, I had to do a format on the HDD a couple of times before it would accept a new OS install. S I think when the mobo died, it corrupted the data on the HDD.
