Dvd questions?

Ok, here's the wholee story sorry if it's boring...

I videotaped an event at our church and then transferred the video onto my computer, which I then edited with pinnacle studio 9. Burned a few dvds using ridatas 8x dvd+r which I ordered from newegg. Now some dvd players are having problems playing the disc, others will run it perfectly. On some of the players the picture and sound laggs horribly, I've tried everything I could think of includind burning new discs but still on certain players the playback is terrible. Could it be the ridata dvds? Should I try a different brand of discs or what? Any help would be much appreciated because I have given out many of the discs and people are complaining

Yep, get another brand. Ridata is Ritek, which doesn't make good DVD+Rs.
Get DVDs with the Ricoh Dye, or Verbatim MCC.
Also, use DVD-ROM booktype for higher compatiblity, too.

Another question: What bitrate did you use for MPEG-2 encoding ?

Each DVD has an identifier code, so a DVD drive can identifiy it. That's called booktype. A DVD+R, for example, has usually a DVD+R booktype, etc.

Now, due to the format war between + and -, there are devices that just don't like a certain format. In the past, players from some manufacturers won't play the + format. Some players didn't play the - format.
Now, to overcome that, the + format allows you to use another booktype. You can write the "DVD-ROM" booktype to a DVD+R.
DVD-ROM is the commercial pressed disc. Every player plays them back (that's what the player are build for). Now, if you insert a DVD+R with DVD-ROM booktype in one of the stubborn players, you fool them. They read DVD-ROM, think it's a DVD-ROM, and play it back.

Bitrate means bits per second. The video can be up to 9.8 mbps, but some players have problems with streams that are over 8 mbps. So, if your bitrate is too high, that can be a reason, too, for choppy playback on some players. 8 mbps is very much, and you shouldn't need more.

How can I change it to the dvd rom booktype?

Doesn't Studio 9 haven an option for this ?
If not, you can burn with Nero or DVD Decrypter, they can change the booktype. What Nero version do you have ?

Also, what DVD burner to you have ?

I do not believe that the Sony's allow you to change the booktype 'out of the box.' Since they are just rebadged Lite-Ons, that was one feature Sony removed. I think you can get around this, but I am not sure.

Yes I do have a sony and I did some research just now and I don't think it supports booktype change.... Damit! Wish I knew that earlier, Do you think I should try to buy some different discs tho and see if that will make a difference, or could it just bee that some of the older players do not like dvd+r discs.. Or should I try dvd-r...

I do not think you find find a disk that is compatible with all, since some players are designed to not play one type.

What DVD burner do you have ?

Yes, Sony drives don't support booktype change, but they only started recently. So, they used to.
I believe the Sony DRU 700 does have the ability of bitsetting if you don't have the newest firmware on it.

Also, what bitrate did you use ? Did you use 8 mbps max ?

I used the auto setting on studio 9.. I guess its 8 then not sure tho
