looking at a Radeon 9800SE Refurb:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-131-236R&depa=0
i believe the SE is normal with half the pipelines deactivated, right?
so, i assume the refurbs are probably due to failed soft-mods.
anyway, i know newegg is rather safe, but how are the refurbs?
should i buy? should i avoid? is this a bad card to begin with?
thanks,
AS

Newegg refurb vid cards have worked fine for me. I've bought two previously. Keep in mind you only get the card typically without any software, cables, connectors, etc. I'd stay away from the SE cards. You'd be better off with a 9600XT than the SE version of a 9800.

Agreed - something like the Sapphire Radeon 9600XT would do a bit better and at the same time, cost menially more (about 10 USD) for a new card.

how about the nVidia FX 5900 XT? this was originally above my price range, but other prices have dropped enough for me to splurge.
i see that the Radeon 9800 Pro fares better in the pretty graphs and both are about the same price (at least the ones i am looking at ~$200)
it seems that the 9600 XT is a little below $150.
i guess i can jump for the full blown Radeon 9800 Pro since it does not seem all that much more expensive. problem is, they seem to jump off the shelf rather quickly. apparently all those tickle-me-elmo kids are growing up. how does this look?

The prices are rising on the Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB 256-bit...that's for sure. It's the whole concept of supply and demand - seems to me like the GF6600GT couldn't make it onto the shelves in large numbers in time to see holiday buyers see them as a potential present.
I found a Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (256-bit) for 211 USD - take a look. I'd suggest it highly.
