What's the difference between Secure Digital and XD memory other than price?

Secure Digital
By physical dimensions these are the smallest of the memory cards and are therefore commonly used in ultra-compact products. The only difference between Secure Digital cards and MultiMedia Cards is that Secure Digital cards have a write-protect switch for added data security. Currently 512 MB is the maximum capacity for these cards though larger capacities will be out soon.

xD Picture Cards
This is the smallest of the memory cards. Fuji and Olympus developed this card and released it in 2002. Many of their cameras use this type of memory. The card is small enough that it will fit into an adapter that will allow it to fit into a Compact Flash slot.

AFAIC the XD's are TOO small! I perfer CF because of the popularity.

i've seen adapters in MALAYSIA. i sue CF to but it takes up too much power. so im thinkkking of switchng camara or buying one of those adapters and see how power consumption is like.

I don't think the memory is responsible for "taking up too much power".
Where did you get the idea that it is doing this? Why do you say what you did?

That's a bit outdated information... 2.0GB cards are shown in stock at Ingram Micro.

I think the camera LCD screen is what sucks up the power - operating the memory card is negligible in comparison.

I agree... my camera instructions tell you to conserve battery life, 1) turn off the LCD backlight, 2) Turn off the LCD screen completely.

SD cards are wother it in my mind, i mean there is such thing as too small. I still have a 256MB card that about a year oooold, while i have misplaced about 11 XD cards.
Also i have the constant problem of re wirting the cards, so i suggest going for the SD

Thanks for the info guys.

I have two cameras. One uses SD and another XD. I was kinda disappointed to see that XD memory costs way more than SD.

Is XD faster? I don't get why the costs are more.

XD is more expensive because it's proprietary Fuji/Olympus - same reason Sony memory sticks cost more.

Ah, maybe that's why the cameras cost slightly less than the others.

I think I am going with the Sandisk alternative. Those are slightly cheaper. Nowhere near as cheap as the SD though.
