Cannot read audio cd's

my dvd drive (lite on sohw 1213s) doesn't read audio cd's. actually, it doesn't read most audio cd's. it does read a few of my cd's (i think i have gotten 5 or 6 to work). i have been trying to use windows media 10 to rip my cd's so i can listen to them on my iriver and on my computer. right now i have a stack of 20 or so cd's sitting next to me that i can't read/rip on my computer. here's what happens.
i open dvd drive. i have tried using the button on the drive and the software "eject" in "My computer." no difference. i put the cd in. i close it, using the button on the front of the drive. the drive whirs a bit, then stops. never really gets up to "read" speed. when i go to "my computer" --> "d:" it thinks that there is no disk in the drive. when i double click or hit "explore" or "open" it opens and there are no files. it reads game cds' and that kind of stuff fine. i thought maybe it was because some of my cd's are scratched. but i bought a new cd, and it wouldn't read that one either. this also happened on my last computer (although not to the same extent) when i was using an msi cd-rw, so i'm wondering if it is possible that a program i am running is doing this, or if when i configure xp to my liking, i am accidentally breaking it or something. any help would be appreciated.

Edit: forgot to mention that it reads all dvd's fine.

Hi timbit, try this method, right click the DVD drive in my computer and select properties, select the autoplay tab and in music cd select the software player you like and click apply then ok.

thanks for the reply, but i'm afraid that it's a no go. i went into the autoplay and switched it like you said. it had been set on prompt each time. unfortunately, nothing changed.

Just out of curiosity, how old/used is the drive in question? I ask this because my CD has a problem with audio CDs too. If I put a CD with a program on it in the drive, it reads it fine, but audio CDs were a no-go. I would have to keep ejecting the CD and putting it back in until after 15 or 20 tries it might actually recognize its there. The problem with mine seems to be that the drive is just flat worn out. I've noticed though that the problem seems to be worse with the newer "enhanced" CDs....the ones that come with things like music videos or pictures and stuff of the band. Hard as heck to get those to be recognized by the drive, but the regulars usually work okay. So if the drive has been used alot it may just be wearing out.

Check Liteon's site for a firmware upgrade, if available. If that doesn't fix it, might be time for a new drive.

It may have a dusty lens - open the tray and blow it out with a can of air or use a CD drive cleaning kit.

juppy: pretty much brand new drive, bought it when i put together the build in my sig, middle of september.
PR: that was one of the first things i did back in october, but i will check to see if anything newer has come out.
confused: nope, all store bought.
glc: i'll try that too.

i was kind of wondering... the case i am using is the antec aria. it has a propriety 300 watt psu. 300 watts is not a whole lot for my build, but i figured that if the shuttles could do it with 250 watt psu, i would be fine. is it possible that i am not getting enough power to the drive?

otherwise, i guess i'm looking at a new drive... i think that it still has a manufacturer's warranty. if i return it, do i just get a new drive, or would i be able to get my money back and get a different (quieter, lol) drive? i bought it oem at a local store.
