Unwanted Internet re-connections

For some reason, everytime I log off the Internet lately my computer waits a bit and then re-connects to the Internet. I want this to stop! I have Windows 98 and use AT&T Worldnet service. I checked in the internet icon from control panel and didn't see any option to disable. The problem just started happening and I have no idea why. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Have you installed any new programs lately? Sounds like something is looking for updates? I've seen windows media player do this and a few others. Check you options on your software to see is there is anything looking for updates.

Between this and your other post about Paint on startup, I am getting pretty convinced that you have a virus. Do a full system scan with an UPDATED virus scanner (not the 2 year old Mcafee that came with the computer, for example).

Also I've seen this behavior with the IE 6.00.2465.0003 if you have it installed the only fix is to remove it. And if you reinstall it be sure to have nothing open and close your connection to the internet.

I scanned the entire computer with the Innoculate IT virus scan that I downloaded for free last week and there were no viruses. The last time I booted up Paint did not come up so I am hoping that problem went away. I checked in MSCONFIG and found two AT&T Worldnet options in the WIN.ini tab. Should I uncheck these two programs? I am afraid too because all of the other programs in WIN.ini are checked and enabled. Thanks again.

It depends exactly what they say - run sysedit and bring win.ini to the front and read through it - copy and paste any lines referencing AT&T here and I'll take a gander.

Also, open your scheduled tasks folder and tell me what's listed in there.
