At present I have a geforece FX5500 256MB vid card.
I want a new card better than this, but isn't gonna cost me a mint.
Can only afford about $100 right now. would prefer but willing to got ATI if need be.

The Radeon 9600 Pro (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-471&depa=0) outclasses all the Nvidia cards in that price range. It is a very good card. The Nvidia FX series cards aren't good performers and the GeForce 6000 series (6600, 6800, etc.), which are excellent performers, start at $200.

Save up 20 bucks for a 9600 Pro (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-131-219&depa=0) and you would see an improvement by probably a large amount. The XT version woul dbe even better, but that is about 140-160.
Wow, wonder how I missed that one... Hmm... well I guess ya don't have to save up 20 bucks

I was looking into the 9800Pros. Is this one any good?
Saphire 9800pro (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-368&depa=0)
That's about as far as i can go off of the previosly set price of $100.

That is not a Radeon 9800 Pro - it's a Sapphire Radeon 9800 with a 128-bit buswidth. I'd say if you're going to go with that, try the Radeon 9500 Pro or a Radeon 9600XT. They should give you a bit more for the price and are priced around 150 USD.

If you search 9800 pro chipset that one isn't listed. IT probably picked up on the 9800 part.
