View Full Version : Doom 3 - What type of problem

I thought I'd try some gaming with my PC. FIrst off I tried benchmarking with 3dmark 03, and got a score over 10,000. Then I installed Doom 3, and loaded it. The graphics looked very clear, but here's the problem. When turning often part of the screen is behind. What I mean is most of the screen shifts at one time, then a few milliseconds after, the rest catches up. It leads to a sort of choppiness. If I spin really fast, or slow it doesn't happen, its mainly at medium movement speeds, and the odd time in a in game movie. I have a eVGA 6800GT and my LCD monitor has a 16ms response time here's my monitor: (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&dept=1&sku_id=0665000FS10052480&catid=10231&newdeptid=1)
So, does this sound like a monitor issue, video card issue, or a settings issue. The game still looks amazing, but is this normal? and what can I do to correct it?

I had a problem that kind of sounds like this before. Whenever I would turn in ut2k4, the game would lag a second or so behind. Disable any active anti-virus programs and update to your most recent video card drivers (71.20 I think)

I've got the most up to date drivers. Also, I could try disabling anti virus, but my computer has a 3400+ CPU and 1 gb of memory, I think it can handle it. I'm going to try it using the TV out, see if I get the same issues, it may just be the monitor

What are your system specs? [edit]: It looks like the hardware shouldn't have a problem handling it.
Spyware has an impact on performance. Have you done any scans recently?

Do you have V-Sync enabled? It sounds like a tearing problem which V-Sync is supposed to cure.

That sounds like it may be it. I'm not sure if its enabled. This may sound like a dumb question, but where do I go to enable or disable it?

In Doom III go to Options > System > Advanced Settings and enable "Verticle Sync".

oh its a game setting, not a system setting? will all games have a way to turn on V-Sync, cus I'm guessing I may have this problem with other games

Well that fixed the problem, thanks

Most newer games have V-Sync. I haven't seen it in older games. What it does is keep the frame rates down a bit so the refresh rate on the monitor can keep up. When your frame rate is too high for the refresh rate that's when you get problems.

You don't always get problems though, so you may want to wait to see if it happens in games before you do it. For example, I have a 75hz refresh rate and get over 100fps in Halo with no problems.

Yeah it seems to vary by game. I only enable it if I'm having problems but I usually don't. I have my monitor at 85hz. I get under 100 FPS in most of my games anyway.

well I only have 60 Hz, and there's not much I can do about that cus its an LCD (and apparnetly its almost always 60). I guess thats one advantage of a CRT, but those things are just too big.

Even if the game does not offer vsync options, you should be able to enable it in your video cards control panel/driver settings I dont know where it is in the nvidia control panel but it looks like this on my ati.

HERE (http://community.webshots.com/photo/59503293/245134579qAlqul) is where it is in the Nvidia drivers. (click "Normal Size" for a clearer image)

Yes, the refresh rate on an LCD is pretty much fixed, unlike a CRT.

Ya, if I had the room for it, I'd have one pC, but have two setups. ONe with a multimedia keyboard, MX1000 mouse, and nice 19 inch LCD, for programming, web surfing, and other desktop applications. Then another setup hooked up to the computer with the same mouse, but the Saitek gaming keyboard, and a 20 inch CRT just for gaming. It would have its problems but it coudl be done.
Anyways, I put VSync on my video card on. I ran 3dmark03, it went from over 10,000 to around 6000. Big difference, anyways I'll leave it as application controlled (even with a lower frame rate, its better than all that tearing)
I'm also going to try it on my TV with my S-Video out, although I'm not counting on this as a solution since I don't think it gives very good picture. But, its worth a try

the thing with 3dMark03 is that you are limiting each thing to only 60FPS so the scores will naturally go down. Vsync is only useful for actual gaming experience and not benchmarking.
