Narrowed the printer problem down but need help

hi, so my computer has been having a problem where it skips every few seconds. i pinpointed the problem being the printer port driver. so i went into the device manager and disabled it (if i uninstall it it just reinstalls itself when i reboot). however when i disable it the computer will randomly reboot and tell me that it has recovered from a serious system error. after having gone thorugh microsoft i found out that this is caused by me disabling the driver. so my question is, is there anything i can do? either i leave the driver enabled and the computer skips (but doesn't crash), or i disable it, have it run fine, but have it restart every so often.

Think I'd try downloading the latest drivers for your mobo from Asus and update all of yours. If that doesn't fix it, try flashing the bios to a newer version. Here's a link to your downloads.

sorry i should have said that i was on my parents computer its a
1.2 ghz amd
256 mb ram
gigabyte mobo
windows xp pro.
i disabled auto restart on an error so i could get the BSOD that would tell me what was wrong. it gave me this error code
0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0xf9dhecfc, 0xf5b0abbc, 0x00000000)

that's all the info i could muster. now when i go on microsoft support it tells me that it's a problem with the hardware acceleration, i disabled it completely but then my brother can't use any 3d games. i'm pretty sure it's not display driver oriented as it just happens when i disable the printer port. :confused:

Have you added any new hardware or software just before this problem began?

yes, my dad added an hp officejet printer. he used to have a printer plugged into the port that i'm disabling. when he installed the new printer, he just unplugged the old one without uninstalling any drivers. he then plugged the new one in (it's usb), so what i'm guessing is that the computer lags because it keeps on looking for the printer on the printer port? which is why the problem is solved when i disable it, however, i get that BSOD

Uninstall the old Canon printer software. Disable the parallel port in the bios if you aren't using it any more.

thanks guys. i finally got it to work without skipping or restarting. i ended up disabling the parallel port in the bios and uninstalling the canon stuff. thanks a lot for those suggestions glc. it only took me 3 weeks of intermittent vacation to finally fix this problem :D
