Roughly 70% of the time when I drag and drop a set of files Explorer will crash. It does now force a reboot but it's annoying to ahve to open Explorer each time.
I have tried 3 different drivers including the latest nVidia ones for my video card. I have also tried three different drivers for my Logithech mouse including the latest ones. I have installed all the latest ME updates but Explorer still crashes. It happened before I upgraded the CPU and before I added 128Mb of RAM.
I've run out of ideas.
System
Windows ME
Celeron 700MHz
256Mb RAM in BE6 MB
WinFast 3D S320 II Ultra
12.5Gb DeskStar - IDE3 master - boot disk
20.5Gb Barracuda - IDE4 master
6.4Gb IBM - IDE2 master
Logitech MouseMan
Sound Blaster Live Value
NetComm 56Ultra SVD
ASUS 50x CD-ROM - IDE2 slave
HP CD-Writer 9100i - IDE1 slave
if you are familiar with the insides of your machine and not afraid to go digging around, pull your Soundblaster Live and try again.
Hello cutiebird,
there is a problem with SBLive! and WinME. In a PC magazine I've read this:
Open editor and make a simple text file, containing this:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Creative Tech\DeviceInfo\PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0002]
"MMX"="1"
Then rename the .txt file to .reg file, i.e. test.reg. Double click on it, and see if it helps.

It does not appear to be caused by the Sound Blaster Live card. I removed the card and it made no difference. I'm not afraid to edit the registry so I simply added the key and value. It too made no difference.
Explorer does not crash all the time but only when the files being dragged seem to be 'hovering' before they are dropped. Explorer does not crash when the object being dragged is 'stable' while being dragged and while waiting to be dropped.
I have always had animation turned off and mouse cursor trails turned off. My guess is that it's either the video or mouse driver although i've tried three different ones of each.
You can try uninstalling the Logitech mouse drivers completely and just use the default Windows PS/2 mouse driver. I have had problems over the years with the purple Logitech mouse guy. Try the Leadtek video driver if they have one specifically for ME instead of the generic Nvidia drivers.

Ok, now I've tried four different mouse drivers and four different video drivers and I've still got the problem. I have tried the standard mouse driver and I downloaded and installed the Win9x ME Leadtek driver but neither helped.
I cannot describe it any better than I did in my previous post. Sometimes the object being dragged does not seem stable. It's jumping about like it's blinking like the cursor.

This is a strange one, but maybe a virus scan with the latest DAT files is in order?

It could be a problem with ur hdds. have you tried scandisk on all your hdds. Does any particular drag-drop source-to-destination pattern bring this problem about?, check ur dimms, take one out to see if that helps.
Just some suggestions from a rookie. :)
