I NEVER allow ANYONE except for me to use my computer. My wife has her own, so does my daughter...I just don't trust either one of them with my precious piece of machinery...My wife thinks I'm ignorant, BUT, if you look at my wife and daughters computers, their always screwed up! Any opinions? Do you let your families play with your computer? :D

nope no1 touches this... i spend so much time fixin my familys 3 laptops and 2 pc's its not even funny...today spent a while removiing 500 spyware progs from my sis's comp and a bunch of other stupid stuff that was on there, toolbars and such, weatherbug. "50 FREE MP3s", "flashget" dont even know what half of em were but they all made me take surveys when i uninstalled them with stuff like "why are u uninstalling this, and they gave u options like popups and slowing donw the computer so obviously they were spyware and adware...lol one asked me what other products i would like to see from the company, i checked 'other' and wrote "NONE!"

My wife and my Mom both have their own computers, but I let my wife use mine when she wants to. I actually use my Mom's computer (the one in my sig) more than my own because of where it's located...just more convenient for me and my Mom doesn't use it anymore anyway (medical problems). I keep all the computers up to date as far as anti-virus and anti-spyware are concerned so they rarely have any problems. My wife does computer programming and is pretty careful with her own computer. The only problem I had to take care of on her computer is when she kept getting BSODs because of a bad stick of RAM. Changed out the stick and no more problems.
But I guess the thing is I'm not very strict when it comes to my own computer.

My computer isn't technically mine since I didn't pay for it. I did build it though but it is a family computer with 4 user accounts. Works fine for me. My family members know enough not to mess anything up. When I build mine later this year it will probably be used by everyone too. I guess I'm more trusting then you guys. :)

Our family tried the "family computer" concept. I prefer w2k, my wife/daughter like XP. I set up a dual boot, got nothing but grief about it, so I grudgingly did away with w2k and used XP for awhile. The problem lies in our software preferences really. The ladies like all the bloated software they can get...SBC, digital photo, all the extra HP/Logitech cordless garbage, game CDs they get from cereal boxes, pretty much anything they like the look of they installed. I like simplicity, i.e. a card reader with no digital camera software. When I started attending college again, my time spent on the PC was too much for my wife to bear, so I bought her a laptop, gave the "family" PC to my daughter, and built a shop computer for me. Everybody is happy. I clean WinTools off the daughter's about every 2 months, other than that it stays pretty clean.

I built this rig with my own money. My mom, dad, & sis use it. I don't really mind it even though I get trojans, adware, etc. once in a while. If I was going to have it my way, I'd rather keep this all to myself. But as of now, I still live with my parents so I must share.
I feel the same way with my car. I still have a long way to pay it off to my parents so I have no choice but to let them drive it when they ask for it.
I've observed that guys don't like to share their toys, especially the new ones. But once we've gotten used to the item or got a better one, we usually put it aside or lend it out.

I just know how my daughter uses a computer...she just blatantly clicks on anything and if error messages come up, she doesn't even bother to read them she just clicks ok...NOT even knowing what the heck she just did! Talk about bad, I scanned her computer the other day and found 980 instances of spyware and adaware!
As far as I'm concerned they can both keep their fingers OFF my computer!

I prefer people not to use my PC anytime, but when it comes to family members it really depends on the person, there's really only one or two people that I would trust to use my PC without screwing anything up, other then that, heck no!

Hmmm, I live by myself so not a problem here. However, my son was complaining that his xyl was downloading too many games and messing up their computer and he was tired of it. So, am building a computer for him and that should solve the problem.
Understand what most of you are talking about when you don't wanna share your computer.
The thing is, the name explains it all. They don't call them personal computers for nothing. They are just that, personal to the person using them. So there you have it, not many people like sharing them. lol

It's Saturday night and for a change my wife and I are home, I have had a few glasses of rum and just watched a cartoon film on the Disney channel, now I am reading these posts and they are hilarious. There is something wrong with us GEEKS not allowing anyone to use our computers and Baileys comments about not even allowing people in the room never mind using his machines :D who needs TV with entertainment like this, it's priceless :D
Keep it up guys these are the best.........

My wife uses this one from time to time, the kids have thier own. When the kids do use mine, they are being monitored closely and they both know NOT to install anything at all...PERIOD. I have told my wife many times that I am NOT putting all those silly games and free software apps on my pc. They kids can put all that free crap on their own. I have to try to fix theirs once it awhile when my 8 year old says it shutsdown on it's own, or when apps crash back to the desktop.
I do a format about once a year anyway on them both, whether they need it or not. :D
I wonder, if you have separate accounts on XP and one gets a virus, is the whole hard drive infected or only that particular user? I've never had to work with anything like that yet.

the reason is, my room is my workshop with a bed in it.
when ever my grand kids come in here there eyes open wide at all the toys they could play with, and all the buttons and knobs to play with too.

Everyone here has a account on my computer , there are some things just easier to do with two computers at once. Now my wife's computers are off limits to everyone but her.

I agree rjfvillarosa! I let other people on my computer, usually just my brother since my computer is the only one that can play good games. There's another computer that is for my cousins to surf the internet and chat. I don't allow downloads on my computer, that's where problems really begin.

Anyone in the family can use mine. After all it's only a PC. Members of my family will still be around when this thing is outdated and replaced. So tell me who or what is more important.

i have a managed account set up for visitors to use, in OS X you can control pretty much every aspect of what they can and can't do. I have a list of programs they can use and they are limited to those, they can't save files or install anything or run any scripts, so they can't hurt the computer in any way.

Nobody uses my computers period..... My old 486 is used by my sister to play the games that were included in Win95 and that is all that is on that system anymore. The system in my sig cost way too much to let anyone mess with it. And my Gateway? I won't let anyone use that one either. Selfish? Na, just over protective of my stuff is all. Actually I think the saying is true, "Don't trust anyone", because I guess I really don't, to an extent.

It doesn't take much to mess up a computer...and like I said, I don't want people downloading stuff that I don't approve of...once you get that garbage on there it's hard to get off!

Yah, I let my family get on my PC. Doesn't really bother me. I clean it up every 2-3 weeks, and it runs fine, and they (my siblings) don't download a lot of spyware so it works out.
