vertical hard drive????????

hi all, just a quick one for u, does the hard drive have to sit horizontal or can it go vertical in the case, am doin a case mod and it would help big time if it could sit up-right.......................... :cool:

It can sit upright a lot of manufacturers install them that way.

It would be unwise to reposition a used hard drive from one plane to another, once a hard drive has been used horizontally or vertically they are best left in that position. The bearings of the platters become acustomed to the position and altering it often results in premature failure of the bearings.

If it's a new drive I think it would be fine right?

New drive no problem, but be vary wary of changing the plane/axis of and old drive, and not necessarily old either just having been used a few times is enough. It seems that the bearings settle into a working position and moving them puts excess strain on them.

its an old drive, think i will find a way to fit it horizontal, dont want to destroy it

Aside from the obvious wear factor it is one of the reasons I advise people against buying refurbished hard drives as a so called "bargain".

From a commercial point of view I don't want comebacks and unhappy customers, When I first went into business for myself about thirty years ago, an old guy said to me, "do a job once and make money, do it twice and break even, do it a third time and it is costing you money". You try and get a manufacturer/supplier to pay your labour for changing one of their parts that has gone faulty.
