system will not boot with new HDD

Hi there. I bought a new (bigger) HDD for my computer....now i knew there would be an issue with the size and BIOS, but the computer will not actualy power up with the new drive, it goes long enough to flicker the power on and back off, that's it. When i unplug the drive it works fine. I do have the jumpers set according to what Maxtor says. Thanks for any help.

could you please give some information on what all you computer has in it
is this a second drive, are you wanting to install a new blank hard drive and install a O/S on it or what ?

Post your complete system specs and the operating system you're using.

Exactly how do you have the drive jumpered and what kind of IDE cable are you using...80 wire or 40 wire?

Is this a retail hard drive or a OEM?

Go to the Maxtor web site and download the diagnostic utility...you may need to test the hard drive.

sorry, i always forget something...ok it is a PAG 2130 mobo, maxtor (brand new retail) diamond max 9 HDD, award BIOS 4.51pg V1.0, AMD k2-3d 550 MHz processor, ummmmm i think that's all there is. One thing is, as soon as you plug power into it the system dies....without the IDE cable hooked up (80 wire BTW). I have the drive jumpered for the 32 Gb limit according to the Maxtor site. I already have a OS on it, which i installed on another system (it was faster)...i don't think it's an OS problem as it doesn't get a chance to even see it...seems to me that it's the actual drive not software. It is an ATA 133 drive, and i cannot seem to find out if my mobo is an ATA 100 or if it will accept both. thanks for the quick replys

Your drive is defective or your power supply is pooping out from the extra load.

The mobo manufacturer site lists that onboard IDE bus as Ultra DMA 33/66, which may be the cause of the problem. You did say that you did not hook up the IDE cable and are having the same problem though, so I'm not sure.
Was the old hard drive 33/66 or was it 100?

Just in case you were trying to install XP, or have it installed. For some reason FIC says XP isn't supported. Found this in an email they sent to someone.

That's not an issue, IDE has always been backwards compatible.

Windows XP is not supported and causes instability on the power
management.

Not an issue either. The computer does not stay powered up whenever the drive is physically connected to the power, whether the IDE cable is connected or not. This is only one of 2 things, as I already indicated - the drive is tripping the power supply off line, so it's a bad drive or a bad power supply, period. Is my logic flawed in any way?

lol...GLC i like your style man. I figure it's the power supply, it is very old...but i will check the HDD in another computer first. Thanks.
