It's a contest started by the RSA to crack a RC5 64bit encrypted message. The winner gets 2000$. Distributed.net distributes parts of the keyspace that has to be checked to you. Read about it on http://www.distributed.net or click on the link in my sig.

ok but exactly how do they do this? will it slow down my internet connection?

No, the only time the client will access the internet, is to send completed packets and download new work units, just like SETI@home. The cpu will be doing all the work, but it won't be slowing your system down any.
