Here are the rules:

You answer the previous posters question then post your own question.

Question:
What is the worst invention of all time?

HAL9000
05-10-2001, 04:23 PM
The modem... 95% of people on the internet... shouldn't be :D

Favorite physics question:

You aim a gun horizontally at a monkey hanging from a tree. The moment the bullet leaves the barrel, the monkey lets go of the branch. Does the bullet hit the monkey and why/why not?

It is assumed that the monkey is with the range of the gun.
It is assumed that the bullet will either hit, or fly past (depending on your answer) the monkey before the monkey hits the ground
Bullet velocity, caliber of the gun, size of the monkey, etc are all irrelevant. ALL necessary information has been given to answer this.

Tiretool
05-10-2001, 04:30 PM
If the gun is fired at the exact time the monkey lets go, the bullet will hit the monkey, because the effects of gravity are the same on the traveling bullet as they are on the falling monkey.

What would you consider to be the greatest medical achievement of all time?

Xayd
05-10-2001, 05:23 PM
Agreed Hal ;).

We've managed to all but stamp out the Bubonic Plague, which is rare from what I know (which is not much in medical terms). I can't think of many deadly diseases off hand that were completely stamped out by humans, but that seems to be one.

Why do people call tech support for help with a problem, then lie about the problem itself? (can ya tell I'm at work now;)?)

My car has got a nasty sputter to it lately when in first gear or at idle with the transmission in gear (i.e. at a red light). Question: How did AMD sneak up on Intel? They used to have processors that really blew compared to Intel, and now they are right on par in terms of the desktop performance market

Info: It was just dinner @ Red Lobster with the hottie...nothing major boys. I got called a sweet guy while she had a sweet smile on her face. It's been a while since I've been that kind of thing. I gotta say, the Pan seared Walleye with Lemon Butter sauce @ Red Lobster ROCKS!

It was a Final in one of my Major Requirements, Software Design in Object Orientated Languages. I went into the test with a total weighted score of 28.9/30 in the class (VERY High A) and I knew the answers to everything on the final and the Prof thinks I'm the next C-S Poster Child, so I'm pretty sure that puppy was an ace. University only gives students two hours per final..this one took me from 7:45-8:35...no sweat.

audiyoda
05-12-2001, 09:35 AM
Intel was and still is complacent. Intel has always had processors that beat AMD, but never assumed the consumer market would want them. Look and the Zeon processor -- for all intend and purposes, it's Intel's Athlon before the Athlon came out. But how many consumers know it even exists? Not to mention price -- AMD is beating Intel at a game Intel has never had to win.

Everyone claims the P4 is AMD's downfall with the price of the P4 and mobo comparable to a T-Bird and DDR mobo. But those same apologists forget the Rambus MUST be purchased in pairs and is three times as expensive and DDR which needs only one DIMM to operate perfectly. Not to mention Rambus throughput is a 32bit word (16 bit on each chip) while DDR runs at 64bit. And by the time the P4 has DDR support, AMD will have thier P4 beater in consumers hands. Do I need to go on?

exactly how do airplanes fly?

HAL9000
05-13-2001, 02:38 PM
The Bernoulli effect (think it was spelled right). The curvature of the top of the wing causes air to move faster over the top than the bottom. Faster moving air has less pressure than slower moving air. Therefor, there is more pressure on the bottom of the wing than the top causing the wing to create lift.

05-13-2001, 02:56 PM
actually hal you are wrong, according to your theory airplanes could not fly up-side down, my phisics teacher explained it to me,

anyone else wanna take a stab at it?

HAL9000
05-13-2001, 03:33 PM
I still stand by that as yes, they could fly upside down by changing the angle of attack. Changing the angle of attack creates turbulance over the top of the wing (bottom as it is now upside down) than moves even slower than the top of the wing, which in turn still produces lift. Changing angle of attack increases lift to a point, then starts to produce a stall. Constant chord wings stalling from the center out, tapered wings from the tips in (can be countered by building in a "whashout" or twist into the wing) I have built many radio controlled airplanes and fully understand the aerodynamics involved in undercambered, flat bottom, semi-symetrical, and symetrical airfoils including lifting body, wingless aircraft and it all comes down to the bernoulli effect being the basic principle. Symmetrical winged aircraft do NOT fly with the wing perfectly level, but tilted slightly upward. I would like to meet this physics teacher that contradicts the bernoulli effect as the basic principle of flight. It would be interesting to hear his explanation of how a helicopter flies.

Here (http://www.howstuffworks.com/airplane2.htm) is an explanation of flight, AND probably what your physics teacher is teaching. The thing to keep in mind though when you lean toward the second theory, you lean toward instability as well. Most aviation enthusiast would not refer to the second method as "true flight" as in that situation, gliders, while possible, could not perform the way they do as more power is required for flight (in the case of a glider, more power means coming down faster). This second theory basically comes down to, give me enough power and I can make damn near anything fly.

What is the basic principle of a gyroscope?

mairving
05-13-2001, 06:46 PM
Answer:

Let me think a minute. Okay I have got it.

How a gyroscope works
I have searched through many texts. but I have never found an explanation of why a gyroscope should resist being turned in any direction perpendicular to it's axis. Maybe the workings of a gyroscope seem obvious to some and needs no explanation. But still, other obvious physical phenomena are explained. So here is the first published (that I know of) account of the physics behind how a gyroscope works.
Here is a pictorial of a simplified version of a gyro.
<br>
<img src="http://www.accs.net/users/cefpearson/gyro.gif">
<br>
Instead of a complete rim, four point masses, A, B, C, D, represent the areas of the rim that are most important in visualizing how a gyro works. The bottom axis is held stationary but can pivot in all directions.
When a tilting force is applied to the top axis, point A is sent in an upward direction and C goes in a downward direction. FIG 1. Since this gyro is rotating in a clockwise direction, point A will be where point B was when the gyro has rotated 90 degrees. The same goes for point C and D. Point A is still traveling in the upward direction when it is at the 90 degrees position in FIG 2, and point C will be traveling in the downward direction. The combined motion of A and C cause the axis to rotate in the "precession plane" to the right FIG 2. This is called precession. A gyro's axis will move at a right angle to a rotating motion. In this case to the right. If the gyro were rotating counterclockwise, the axis would move in the precession plane to the left. If in the clockwise example the tilting force was a pull instead of a push, the precession would be to the left.
When the gyro has rotated another 90 degrees FIG 3, point C is where point A was when the tilting force was first applied. The downward motion of point C is now countered by the tilting force and the axis does not rotate in the "tilting force" plane. The more the tilting force pushes the axis, the more the rim on the other side pushes the axis back when the rim revolves around 180 degrees.
Actually, the axis will rotate in the tilting force plane in this example. The axis will rotate because some of the energy in the upward and downward motion of A and C is used up in causing the the axis to rotate in the precession plane. Then when points A and C finally make it around to the opposite sides, the tilting force ( being constant) is more than the upward and downward counter acting forces.
The property of precession of a gyroscope is used to keep monorail trains straight up and down as it turns corners. A hydraulic cylinder pushes or pulls, as needed, on one axis of a heavy gyro.
Sometimes precession is unwanted so two counter rotating gyros on the same axis are used. Also a gimbal can be used.

Q? why are people facinated with the reality based and the "millionaire and wannabee" tv shows.

MITotaku
05-16-2001, 08:08 PM
Because they like to see human conflict and raw human emotion, it's rather sick and disgusting from a few stand points. It's the same reason they watch Springer. It's not like it's really real (all of the shows are edited and have added cosmetics), I really find any reality shows boring. The only reason I watch Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is because I like quiz shows. I'd much rather watch something unreal, I for one have too much reality in my life already.
