Is it advisable to get:
2x256mb @ 3 CAS
or
1x512 @ 2.5 CAS

What are you system specifications for where this RAM will going? What brand name of RAM are you looking at? What is the speed of the RAM you are looking at (PC2700, PC3200, etc)? Typically the lower the CAS latency the better the RAM is. Unless you plan on overclocking the differnce between the 2 latency's you listed isnt a big deal. If your motherboard supports 'Dual Channel' mode then I suggest staying with the 2x256MB kit or any paired RAM kit of any size.

Also take a look at this website below to find compatible RAM for you motherboard. The website will only list Corsair memory though and not other brands.
