View Full Version : Overclocking Problems with a PIII

I've got an A-bit VT6X4 motherboard and a PIII 500 mhz processor. I've been having problems overclocking it. Here's the story.

When I try to overclock it to 600 mhz, still with a 100 mhz FSB, the computer won't boot properly. I get an error that reads: "CPU is unworkable or has been changed. Please recheck CPU Soft Menu." It also reads that my processor is only 500 mhz on boot-up, even though I told it to be 600 mhz.

I can underclock it to 333 mhz, with a 66 mhz bus (but it still gives that weird error). I can't overclock it to a 133 mhz bus at all (even though my mobo supports it and I have 133 mhz SDRAM).

This has made me question my overclocking skills. I seem to remember on my previous computer that I could change the FSB and multiplier to anything I wanted, but the system may not be stable. Why is this computer not letting me make any changes? I've looked in my BIOS to find a setting that might say something like "Halt Boot-up with Wrong Processor?", but I can't find a thing. Any suggestions on getting around this problem? I'd really like to be able to speed up my FSB to 133 mhz.

Thanks a ton!

First of all, you cannot change the multiplier on Intel CPU's. They started locking them at around the 200MMX series. You only have the FSB to work with now. To get it to a 133Mhz FSB (and it may not go that high), you may have to slightly increase the voltage to get it to boot and be stable. I can't remember what Toaster said was the max that you should increase it to, I think it was 2.0 volts (keep in mind that this is an absolute max and would require plenty of cooling, take voltages up in small increments and keep an eye on the heat!). You might want to start increasing the FSB in small increments and kind of "feel out" your processors overclocking ability.

Thanks for the help! I got it figured out now.
