View Full Version : Newegg Product Reviews

I have often wondered how bad products get good reviews on Newegg. I decided to leave a product review on this piece of junk Samsung Printer (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=28-112-022&DEPA=1). I have had 2 Samsung printers over the years and they are terrible printers, have limited places that can repair them and don't honor their rebates.
So I left a bad review on this printer telling my experience. Well first the post wasn't submitted because it said that I didn't meet the posting criteria:
Newegg.com moderates all review submissions to ensure that only reviews that offer helpful insight are published.*
What to include in your submission:
• Experiences with a fully-functional product leading to perceived pros and cons**
• Thoughts about the product's feature-set as you've experienced it
What NOT to include in your submission:
• Profanity, obscenity and other offensive language
• Single-word reviews
• Non product-specific reviews
• Any mention of Newegg.com's competitors by name
• URLs, specific pricing, and specific availability (or other time-sensitive information)
• Experiences with a DOA, defective, damaged or otherwise semi-functional product**
• Reviews that criticize the brand or reseller without a majority of the review offering product-specific insight
*Newegg.com reserves the right to accept or reject any review in its sole and absolute own discretion
**DOA's (Dead On Arrival) are an unavoidable aspect of any business model that involves direct shipment to customers. Please understand that Newegg.com ships only products it assumes to be functional and that any defective product you may have received was either damaged in transit or was anomalous.
So then I edited the post, gave it a one star and said 'Piece of junk and rebates not honored'. Well guess what that one went through but is not showing either in the ratings or in the posts.
So reading product reviews on Newegg's site is mostly sugar coated drivel. I guess the question is why should you even have reviews if they don't show the truth.

I've wondered that myself..... why are they gonna advertize the bad reviews? I looked at reviews all over on my TV at electronic stores.. of course.. everyone loved everything about it.... found it kinda odd that nobody thought the remote control was kinda cheap and had some flaws in the layout of it. So I checked web sites for reviews on it.... the thruth comes out... ya... the TV is great... lotta bad comments on the remote. Not that I'm overly concerned about that... tis the TV I'm enjoying.. not the remote.

I usually only read Newegg's reviews for specific problems people have had with products. For instance, if 5 or 6 different people say "Don't use the driver that comes with this!", I might be a little more careful about that, but as for taking their word on whether something is good or not, I don't. I figure that's what PcMech is for, because people seem to get more straightforward answers about how good a product is here than on Newegg.
Hey, maybe your vote and review didn't go through because you left out the seemingly-mandatory "Newegg rocks!" compliment at the end. Seems like 80% or so of all their reviews have that anymore. :D

And that is one of the reasons I don't read the reviews, as you don't know what you'll get. Even when there are a lot of bad reviews (with the good ones) you don't know if it's a competitor posting them or not.
That why I read PCM: to get the real scoup on things :)

Yeah, I never read those user reviews at Newegg...mostly because I don't know who those people are. They could be complete novices who get excited about any new product they buy.
I know I can get more objective reviews here from experienced users I know and trust.

Somebody here a while back (can't remember which person) had the good idea to throw a plug for PCMech into each review he left on newegg. At least the review would be worth that much. :)

I don't know how true this is but somewhere i read a whlie back that new egg was run only by a handful of people (4-8 to be precise) Like i said i'm not sure exactly how true that is but if it is they prob can't be bothered to read new reviews from customers and prob just edit the same mten good ones chaning the products names and use.

I don't buy the 4-8 people theory. They have multiple warehouses in multiple states. I had to call them today and got at least 3 different folks on the phone in 4 calls.

That is really interesting Mairving, I never saw their review policy. I agree with Juppy also, the reviews are not totally useless. I like to check out the motherboard and chip reviews because you can get a feel for what everyone else is using as far as their hardware configuration. You can notice patterns and it can help you dial-in your next PC build. Of course you have to take reviews with a high amount of cynism at the same time.

3x 400 gb = 1.2 terabytes
2x SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON X850 XT PE Video Card

I agree, TwoRails. My brother and I had the same "sticker shock" the other night when we were looking for parts for his new build. We were looking through the Athlon 64 cpu's page and just out of curiosity I told him that I wondered how dang high some of those processors went in price. He goes to page 2 and at the bottom was some sort of Athlon 64 FX for $1,039!!! I bout fell outta my chair! $1,039 for a piece of silicon not even as big as the palm of your hand!

Maybe we should all switch to drugs. It could be cheaper, and it would make for some interesting conversations. :p

lol good idea spyder hehe. Theres no way that dude knew what he was talking about... claimed the 850xt only took 1 slot.. wrong there.... A few people were talking about the world is coming to $800 video cards.... see the thing is ATI releases those because they know some morons at the beginning are going to buy them haha. In reality that card there cost ATI about $150 to make right around now. The price should be down to about $350-400 by next christmas easily.. thats when they will actually be NEEDED for some games.

somehow I don't think that card cost ATI even 100 dollars to product. The research behind it would have been high.
paying 800 dollars, that is why they call it the bleeding edge.

....and this among many reasons why I pay no attention whatsoever to the reviews. I always check here or google.

that 150 is including all the research they've put into it and all the labor.. then they add a markup on it. Luckly im able to get it without the markup =D.

I mainly read them to scan for common problems on items. For example, if I notice a fair amount of the reviewers have mentioned the size of a video card, the quality of the included software, noise levels, and cheap construction as something to be wary of, I may research it a bit more. Other than that, seeing 5 star ratings for Aspire and Coolmax power supplies has made my lose my faith in humanity.

I have a Samsung ML-1710 laser printer that has been the best computer product I have purchased. The Toner that came with it went bye-bye in the first month but I refilled the cartridge for $6.50 and am still printing with it 13 months later.

ha ha, Tonight I gave a review of a product at Newegg, (the one I got today) nothing negitive but it was edited before it got posted. Wish I had copied my orginal.

Couple things I noticed, I gave it 4 stars, but my review has 5. At the end of my review, I stuck a link to PCMECH, which was deleted.
Also on the review form there is a place for you to put any link to share, which I put PCMECH, it was not posted.

I heard that Newegg has added a lot of the "newegg rocks" stuff too. This makes me suspicious. I really dont like the fact that newegg is taking so much control over these posts. They legally can edit and change your rating and make you say something TOTALLY different than what you did say. From now on i wont even look at those stupid things.. Right now im a lil angry with newegg because i made an order 2 weeks ago.. nothing so i called 1 week after there was no delivery and they said "oh we havent shipped it out.. if there are more problems we will call you"... still no product now and no call. I feel like im getting scammed here. This is VERY unlike newegg to do something like this.

You've fallen into the "don't call us, we'll call you" trap.
Have you gotten a FedEx tracking number? If not, definately give them a call. As far as the shiping service is concerned, the package does not exist without a tracking number.

Hate to jump in late here but many reviews on NewEgg are from ppl that have bought it elsewhere or review the product before it is even shipped.
"I bought this card Monday and it's going to be here tomorrow. WoW. I know this card will kick everyone's butt and it rocks!"
^Yeah, thats a good review :|

I'd like to know two things: when did Creative release the Audigy 4's he has, and 2) what mobo is he running to have 10GB of memory?
I bet hes a little kid, trying to be impressive. Probably about 10 years old, with snot still running down his face.

I don't put much faith in the user reviews but I have reviewed many products and my reviews have always showed up unedited. I have linked to PCmech before as well and the links were not removed. Maybe they have a new person overlooking this stuff.

If s/he has a pair of Audigy 4's (which I hate to admit I didn't know were out) and 10GB of memory on a server mobo, then wow. If not, then....
