TMPGEnc: convert from avi to dvd staggers

hello,
when i convert an avi to dvd with TMPGEnc the result staggers a little bit every couple of frames, do i have to change some of the settings.

Yes.
Get Gspot, open the avi, and post a screen shot.
It could be framerate, aspect ratio, bitrate, codec...
Without knowing exactly what the source video's properties are, there's no way to tell what tmpgenc settings to use.

Hi,

first we need information about the AVI. So, get GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/), load your AVI, and tell us what results you get (codec, resolution, frame rate, etc. .. or make a screenshot (Alt+PrtScr, then paste into paint, save as jpeg) and attach it here).

Are you using TMPGEnc's standard DVD template ? Do you use the wizard ? Do you want the result to be PAL or NTSC ?
Are you using the real TMPGEnc or TMPGEnc Express ?

okay have managed to copy and paste in paint and saved it as jpeg, but when i copy to paste here the paste option is greyed out.

In tmpgenc, try this:

Click on Setting, beside Rate Control Mode, and set average bitrate to 4670.
On the Advanced tab, set Source aspect 1:1
Keep aspect ratio 2.

Your problem in encoding comes from the source file being 23.976fps, and your encode being 29.97 fps (dvd standard). We fix this by encoding at 23.976, and using something called 3:2 pulldown. This set's a "flag" in the file, telling the dvd player how to play it properly.

also im in europe so use pal.

Ok, the problem you're going to have, is an NTSC with pulldown movie at 23.976fps, and you need to convert it to 25fps for pal.
Use the standard DVD Full D1 PAL template, and do NOT use pulldown.
The framerate change from 23.976 to 25fps shouldn't cause much problem, but if it does, then you're probably better off scrapping that project completely. To do a PAL --> NTSC conversion properly, takes tools and time (and usually money, because the tools are not free).
You would be better off seeing if your dvd player can play NTSC disks. If it can, do the encode as I posted above. Your player will "fix" it and output it to your TV in PAL format automatically.
