My 19" Trinitron CRT is hogging too much room on my desktop.

I have been looking at 19" lcds and I haven't seen any posts regarding the Hyundai ImageQuest L90D+
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=24-179-014&depa=1

I am also considering the Sasmsung 915N

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=24-001-185&depa=1

The minumum response time advertised on these are 8ms. I play a lot of games so ghosting and color quality is a must but I am on a budget.

Any recomendations?

I use a Samsung with 12ms response time and it's a great monitor. I can fully recommend it for games and such with absolute minimal (if any) ghosting.

Both monitors have TN panels. They are the fastest panels, so ghosting won't be an issue at all.
However, TN is pretty weak when it comes to color accuracy. TN panels only display 16.2 million colors instead of the full 16.7 million colors, and even the 16.2 million colors are only displayed using a trick called dithering. So, if colors are important, then the TN is not for you.
The other two TFT technologies, IPS and MVA, display the entire range of True Color, that is 16.7 million colors, and that without a trick. But they, especially the MVA, are slower. The best compromise is the IPS panel. It's very fast technology, and has good color accuracy. It also has good viewing angles and a good contrast ratio. Only drawback: They consume more energy that TFTs with TN or MVA panels, but still alot less than a CRT.

So, I'd look for a TFT with IPS technology. BTW, What is your budget ?

If it's between the two you listed, I'd get the L90D+, as it has the same specs as the Samsung, but additionally has the DVI port, which is the real connection for TFTs. VGA is for CRTs only, and a TFT with VGA can't give you the best display quality. That is only possible with DVI.

Thanks for the quick replies!

My budjet is under $500. Ghosting is a concern but I would like a nice color. How is Hyundai's reputation? Do you have any recomendations for LCD that uses a TFT with IPS technology?

Kram:
I have heard that Samsung has a good reputation in the LCD market. How do you like the color? The only thing from keeping from jumping at the Samsung is the lack of DVI and the color issue.

I am hoping to order a monitor soon from Newegg. My son is wanting my Trinitron! ;)

Ok, I did a research for 19" TFTs with IPS/S-IPS technology (S-IPS means super IPS, and is an improved IPS technology) and found some good ones. I don't have a price for every of these monitors, but 4 of them are below 500. Also, every monitor I list has a DVI port, and a min. response time of 25 ms.

These are the 4 monitors that fit your budget, and they have high quality panels:
Fujitsu-Siemens P19-1A (LG Philips S-IPS panel)
Iiyama ProLite E481S-W (LG Philips S-IPS panel)
LG L1930B (LG Philips S-IPS panel)
NEC LCD1960NXi (LG Philips S-IPS panel)

These are other good looking TFTs, but I don't know how much they cost:

Iiyama AU4831D (Hitachi IPS panel)
LaCie Photon19Vision (S-IPS panel)
LG L1910B (LG Philips S-IPS panel)
LG L1930BSNH (LG Philips S-IPS panel)
NEC LCD1970NX (LG Philips S-IPS panel)
NEC LCD1980FXi (S-IPS panel, 18ms min. response time)

LG and NEC make very good quality monitors, so any of them would be good. I don't know about the other brands really, but the LG Philips or NEC panels panels are good quality, so the monitors that use them should be good quality, too.

Only "problem": I haven't found any of them on the newegg page, so if you want one of those monitors, you need to get them somewhere else.

I think the color is fine - the overall screen is a bit dim but still very good. Unless you are going to mind true color, Samsung is great. Excellent gaming LCD. Lack of DVI is certainly a drawback, but making great use of VGA.

Quick comment: I'd suggest taking what RJ saids into deep consideration - he has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to stuff like monitors.

Will the 25 ms response time be an issue for gaming? I would say 80% of my PC use is gaming. I do play a few DVD's.

25MS wouldn't matter if the panel type was TN or IPS although most 25MS panels are MVA or PVA which causes quite a bit of ghosting

RJ

Correct. I listed the monitors (all with IPS panels) based on your requirements that they should perform well in games and provide good color quality. An IPS panel with a min. response time of 25 ms is a very good performer for games, and they have good color quality. It's the only TFT technology that provides both. TN panels are faster but the color quality is not as good, and MVA panels are too slow for good gaming right now.

Is the NEC LCD1960NXi a newer model than the NEC LCD1960NX? Tiger has the NEC LCD1960NXi for $500 plus shipping.

The 1960NX has a PVA panel (which is the Samsung Version of MVA) with a min. response time of 25ms. That's too slow for gaming.

I thought this screen was good for gaming - one of my friends uses it for Doom 3 and tbh I can't notice any ghosting. I don't know what type of panel it is though...

edit: I believe the LG L1940P is also IPS, so you can add that to your 'to look for' list ;)

The wife withdrew most of the funding! :(
She feaked at the $500 price tag on most of the monitors. I went with the HYUNDAI|19" L90D+ at $379. I will give a review once it comes in!

That is a PVA panel, and you should see some ghosting. Sure the 3" long trails don't appear always, but most of the time at fast movements you get the impression of "double pictures". Never seen those ?
A friend of mine has a 25ms MVA panel, and I compared it to my 50ms TN. My 50ms TN was the better performer.

edit: I believe the LG L1940P is also IPS, so you can add that to your 'to look for' list

It's MVA.

The wife withdrew most of the funding!

And she can do that ? That's sad. You should be in control of your money, and no-one else.

She feaked at the $500 price tag on most of the monitors.

So ? Let hear freak out. It's for you, anyway.

You could also have looked at 17" TFTs. I mean, TFTs are not like CRTs, they display the whole area, whereas CRTs do not. A 19" CRT has a visible area of about 17.4", so the 19" TFT is noticeably bigger, and a 17" TFT would have been equal to the 19" CRT you had.
That'd have been an alternative without the $500.

I went with the HYUNDAI|19" L90D+ at $379. I will give a review once it comes in!

Well. . . good luck, then. . .

To be fair to her, we have a trip planned to Germany in October that we need to save some money for. We are going to Rottenburg/Fulda to visit her family but it is a dream come true to visit .

I have no doubt that the monitors that you recomended are superiour....Thanks for the research! The info that you provided had more info than any other thread that I had found on this website! :)

I did find the LG ELECTRONICS L1930B at JR.com for $375 after rebates....$499 up front.

http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product_Id=4001626&JRSource=yahoo.datafeed.LGE+L1930B

Rebates are a pain and 50% of the time I have to hound the manufacturer to send the check.

If the Hundai is a flop, I can show her and return it for one that you recommended! ;)

Oh really ? Cool. A friend of mine studies in Rothenburg/Fulda. It's about an hour and half away from where I live.

So you found one of the S-IPS TFTs. That's good :)

Ok. And if you want a tip: My friend's MVA panel was slowest at black/brown, black/grey movements (example: Counter-Strike, anywhere you have a black lamp, or TV, or something like that). We got 3" trails, so you should be able to reproduce them. Dunno if your monitor will be slowest using the same colors, though, but after a bit of gaming you should find the right colors.

I will definately put it through its paces.

Tom's Hardware guide gave it a decent rating:
http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20050215/index.html

And the guys over at Overclockers have a feeding frenzy over it:
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=364128&page=1&pp=30

A few have complained over ghosting and tearing. If I don't like it and show the wife why, I can get the LG.

You helped me on my initial build, I would like to meet you. If you want to drive over to Rotenburg, we can meet for a beer somewhere. We are flying into Frankfurt and taking the train. My wife's Grandfather is planning on driving us around over there so I don't know how mobile we are going to be.

I was going through the ocforum that New Guy put up a link for. They were talking about the refresh rate of that hundai being 60hz. So if there fps went above 60 they started seeing alot of tearing and said it was nearly unplayable. Ive never heard of anything like this. They were also talking about something called vsync. What is vsync. Heres were they wer talking about it.

http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=364128&page=2&pp=30

P.S. - New Guy, ill be looking forward to finding out how that monitor works for you. Ive been considering the same one.

Hmm that doesnt make any sense. A majority of lcd's are 60hz this isnt a refresh rate comparable to a crt refresh rates. Also If the game is playing over 60fps it would run just as silky smooth on the lcd. Also the guy in thread changed the native resolution of the lcd to play the game which could be a problem. If you read further you will see that he is the only one having this problem and it sounds like a video card driver to me. The LD90+ is supposedly one of the best 19" gaming lcds according to reviews, I think you chose good. Let us now how it performs, I want one :)
