6600GT Confusion!

I'm looking at the 6600GT and in some adds on line it says the minimum requirement is a 350 PSU. Well today I was at Best buy and CompUSA looking at the BFG OC'ed version and PNY regular (each listed at 249.99!) and both boxes said minimum 300 PSU (which is what I have) I'm looking to get the AGP version. Can I get away with my 300?? The only other thing I've upgraded is 512 more MB RAM. I do have a stock RAID setup with 2 HDD's.

What is the equivalent ATI video card? X700? I know ATI power requirements are lower.

Initially, ATi's equivelant was the Radeon X700 XT but they decided to beef it up with the Radeon X800 Vanilla and insert that into the 200 USD price range. Note that this is only PCI-Express version.

As for power supply, I would never risk it - I'd suggest <i>AT LEAST</i> 350W of power especially when you have two hard drives chewing power.

TJohn, you might get away with it, given that you have a QUALITY 300Watts PSU :)

3.3/28, +5/30, +12/15 (3.3 &+5 = 200W)

I've never even heard of those, so I can't tell whether or not it's a quality PSU.

Apparently it's a very decent PSU.

You could always try to cram it in there, if your system becomes unstable you can get a better PSU afterwards. If you want to play sure, then buy a quality 420+ PSU from a reputable manufacturer :)

Thanks for the article! So my lowly VPR Matrix brand computer has some quality components after all. Everything else seem decent quality too. Giving your comment though I think I'll spend the money for a new PSU. I was hoping just to fork out the cash for a new video card but it seems all the decent ones required more power. MOTL - you mention a quality 420W, would an Antec SL400 (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?DEPA=0&description=17-103-912&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch&ATT=Power+Supply+for+Cas) be sufficient? I won't be doing any other upgrades to this machine.

The HDD's seem to be normal ATA, so you should be fine.
