I am new to Linux. I installed Debian Linux on an old P3-450 with 128MB RAM and two 3GB hard disk. Everything seems to be OK except the mouse.

When I start X-Window using 'startx', X-Window came up OK but the mouse just stuck in the middle.

I installed XFree86 and the mouse also stuck in the middle.

I have a ps2 two button mouse. I used dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 to change from PS2 to IMPS2 and still the mouse still does not work.

Anyone running Debian Linux encountered similar problem during first install? How did you fix the problem?

One more piece of information. The mouse works fine when I run Knoppix from a CD.

I was using a HP two button PS/2 mouse and that does not work with KDE or xwindow. I found another mouse, a Microsoft two button PS/2 mouse. I did not change anything in the XFree86 configuration. I just plug Microsoft mouse into the PC and re-boot. The mouse works fine. now.

The only explanation I can think of, is that the HP mouse needed a proprietary or special driver... is it working with gpm in the console?

Mike

P.S. Congrats on tackling Debian... The last time I tried to use it, I drown with their package manager!
