Help appreciated,
I am new to pc building so I am not totally versed in the lingo. I built my first pc last week. To my surprise....it worked! The problem I can't seem to fix is that windows xp pro will not recognize my 200 gb hd. All it acknowledges is 127gb. I read some poss solutions online about installing sp1 or higher post xp install and I did that. I've looked for motherboard driver updates, HD driver updates, Bios updates. Does anyone have any fixes for my problem.
Asus a7v600, xp3200processor, maxtor 200gb hd formatted NTFS, windows xp pro non sp
you already got the service acks, correct? Did you format your HDD in NTFS or the FAT32 file system when you installed win XP?

I installed windows xp formatted in NTFS, then installed the drivers, then went to windows update in installed service pack 2. No change in hard drive space.
hmmm, you only have one partition right? Also, I am not 100% sure, but I believe NTFS will only support 127 gigs per partition, that being the case you would have to make a second partition of 73 gigs using a thrid party program like partition magic
NTFS supports up to 2 TB.
The 127 GB limits are the BIOS and Windows itself. So, check if there are BIOS updates for your mainboard regarding that issue.
Windows XP needs SP1 or SP2 in order to recognize hard drives > 127 GB. Of course, the service pack must be integrated before you install, not afterwards. So, don't use a XP CD without SP, use a CD with SP, if you want a partition lager than 127 GB.
But if you install WinXP without SP on that hard drive, after you install the SP all the space has to be available. If not, the BIOS is the remaining hurdle, and you gotta update it.
With both a new BIOS and XP+SP1 or 2, it's gonna work fine.

i had that same thing happened to me when i built this system. The hd is 160gb and it was showing 137gb with ntfs so i reformatted it as fat32 in dos and everything works well. If you dont have a lot installed maybe you can do that. It's just a suggestion.
Since you installed the service pack, have you looked in Disk Management? The drive is not going to resize the partition all by itself - you should now show about 60gb of unallocated space to the right of your 127gb partition. You also may need to install the latest Via Hyperion drivers for your chipset - they are at www.viaarena.com .
