Download Speed

Hi All:

I seem to be downloading a lot slower since upgrading to WinXP.

Everything I download is at 60.1 Kbit/sec.

I'm sure I was downloading a lot faster with my Win98 OS.

My Connection: Sprint DSL, LAN Connection 100.0 Mbps to Earthlink.

OS: WinXP Pro SP2 with all the latestest up-dates from Microsoft.
Motherboard: ChaintechS84PE Socket 487 ATX w/sound, LAN.
Ram: Two sticks of DDR PC2100 Unbuffered, NON-Parity = 512MB.
CPU: Pentium4 2.4GHz/512/533/1.5v.
Sprint Modem: 645 Series. Connect to motherboard USB Connection.
Sprint Software: USB to 10/100M Fast Ethernet Adapter Drivers.

Motherboard has the latest Chipset Drivers installed.

Windows XP SP2 limits the number of possible TCP connection attempts per second to 10 from an unlimited number in SP1. This can affect performance on server and P2P programs that need to open many outbound connections at the same time.

Notes - With the new implementation, if a P2P or some other network program attempts to connect to 100 sites at once, it would only be able to connect to 10 per second, so it would take it 10 seconds to reach all 100. In addition, even though the setting was registry editable in SP1, it is now only possible to edit by changing it directly in the system file tcpip.sys. Keep in mind this is a cap only on incomplete outbound connect attempts per second, not total connections. Servers and P2P programs can definitely be affected by this new limitation. Use the fix as you see fit.

That is about normal speed for 512 mb/s ADSL, take look at my 1gbs cable, when I tested I had 4 pages opened already.

And I still can figure out what is wrong with yours!!!
Well maybe you should conntact your ISP and ask them is anything wrong with line I don't think that something is wrong because windows XP must be something else!!! :confused:

Darn, ran both and no change, I must have allready done those tweaks. I have Optimize XP on my favorites, so I know I have allready been there. :(

Well I only tried one download as the tweaks has not helped my download speed.

I tried downloading a 7MB utility, and it started at 267kbps/sec, at 1/4 download it had dropped to 64.4kbps/sec, at 1/2 it dropped to 62.4kbps/sec, at 3/4 download it dropped to 61.3kbps/sec, at the end it was downloading at 60.3kbps/sec.

Anyway, that's the problem I started with, and I still have it.

Anymore thoughts on this :-)

If it's normal, I can live with it, but I'm sure that my old Win98 was downloading a lot faster.

Maybe it's not you, maybe it's the server. Try downloading stuff from other places and see what happens. There are sites that will allow me to download at like 800 and others only at 100. It depends on how fast they can upload, how many people are using their site, and also if you have a shared bandwidth.

Well every download (never mind P2P) starts at high speeds(especialy from servers) but it's constantly drops till reaches your actual download speed. Anyways if you are suspecting that your speed is to low you should conntact your ISP and ask them what's happening with line is there are any problems and they should be able to tell you if anything is wrong, as I said my opinion is that your problem is not XP related.
One more thing you don't have download limit do you??? :rolleyes:

No I don't have a download limit.

I did try a number of different download sites, and they all end up at about 60.1kbps/Sec.

And again like I said, my old Win98 I'm sure was downloading in the 3 digit area.

That's why I thought it was something to do with WinXP.

Anyway, I'll get with my ISP, and see if they can check anything for me.

What's still not clear in my head is, if the test results above look good to you, and they were tested using my ISP's connection, then I shouldn't have a problem with this slow downloading. Am I right on this thinking?

Anyway, I'll wait for your response before contacting my ISP. Maybe you can tell me just what to ask them to check or do for me.

60 really isn't that slow at all. My internet is capable of 5,000 kbps, but when I am getting tv shows, I'm happy to be downloading at 40. The rate of data transfer is not going to be the same as the connection speed. Imagine if you have a speed limit of 60 mph on the interstate, but it's 4pm. No one is going to be able to drive that fast, there's just too many other people in the way. Connection speed and actualy download speed have always been far from being close to each other.

Do you have SP 2? I was working on a computer earlier this month for someone that had similar speed problems, and after I spent a few hours doing every update that the person missed over the last 12 months or so, the computer was not only running smoother, but faster also. In applications and also online. Perhaps there are some updates you are missing.

Yes I have SP 2, and I have all the updates from Microsoft.

Anyway, I guess then that I'll just live with this download speed.

I don't think I'll bother my ISP since the tests results above are that good.

I just called to upgrade to 3 Megs and I can't wait till it is activated. They told me a few days, but with Good Friday and the Easter Holiday I should hopefully have it tomorrow.
