you will get alot of different answer on this type of question
but this is what i would reccomend
you can trial both of these before you buy
Nod32 (http://www.nod32.com/download/download.htm)
Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com)
For free i would go with these
AVG Anti-Virus (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/)
Avast Anti-Virus (http://www.asw.cz/eng/download/programs/avast_4_home_downloa.html)
Anti-Vir Personal Edition (http://www.free-av.com/)

I'm using Kaspersky and was using Norton before but you'll notice difference.
Kaspersky runs slower scans(full system scan that is) but checks a lot more files than Norton and average virus scaners I can't compare KAS with Nod32 'cos I haven't tried Nod32 yet and I can recomend Kaspersky for now( and no recomendation on free antivirus I'm not using any)!!!

If you search the forum you will find many other posts like this. Personaly I would only trust my system with either nod32 or kaspersky. AVG7 or avast if choosing a free one. Like lobos said, you should try them to see wich one you like the most.

You're not in any danger using PC-Cillin, tho. Their Internet Security Suite is a comprehensive package and rates well.

Is it better to have stand alone products over suites like pccillin?

It depends on the suite. I would have Trends. I would not have McAfee's or Norton's. I like Trend because it has a fairly light footprint unlike Norton which is a resource hog. AVG is certainly adequate as well. I run AVG on my 2 computers at home and Trend-Micro Client Messaging Suite on my 100 or so computers at work. Trend will pick up some spyware but often has a difficult time removing it.

Agreed with Mairving... it also updates regularly, so unless you pay per MB downloaded it's definitely a good option. Personally, I just use AVG, though I'm considering a move to Nod32
Currently I have used just about every antivirus / security sweet out there...
Trendmicro and Kaspersky are the Best so far
Pros for Trendmicro: Easy to use , doesn't hog resources, and isn't a pisser offer for the firewall and the program controls and popups u get with norton... Cons- interface is somewhat less that what i would expect...
Pros for Kaspersky: Best overall Virus Finder and Protecter and Firewall is OUTSTANDING... The (Anti Hacker IS awesome) it has a very easy to setup firewall rules and application rules and also contains a more nerdy display for ppl that are paranoid. Con: It really hogs resources slows down application opening.
Nod32: Used for about a month loved it maybe be a little difficult to setup and the interface needs some improvements. But the virus protections is topnotch like Kaspersky!!!
Suggestion for now is stay with trendmicro...
And if any1 else has had system slowdowns with Kaspersky let me know... I want to know if its a bug or something... I really want to buy that software cause the power it brings to the table with security of the computer and virus protection...
Worst Antivirus / Security Suites:
Norton (Any Genre+plus norton has always sucked from conception)
ZoneAlarm ( Firewall is too difficult to setup has throughput issues with comcast broadband connections and the AntiVirus is the worst of all... Extremely featureless!!!!
But hey If u want a free copy of Zonealarm ... Just PM .. I will give you my bought Key got free upgrades til Aug or Nov 2005... I didn't like it...

lol, havent seent that before, i can agree with you that the new zonealarm suite is the worst ever, the old firewalls were the best. i also like the new free firewall (without av). Works great for me.
Kaspersky also rox
