I am having a problem with a computer:
Each time i plug something into the USB port the system makes a noise through the speakers BUT a window never pops up telling me I have new hardware. This OS is XP Home SE. The system is eMachines T6000.
There were no drivers to reload... they took me thru the bios to reset or reload things and that didn't work.
Now I am figuring I need XP Pro to fix this problem.
My question is Can I load XP Pro into a system that is using XP Home SE?
The XP Pro I want to load is first edition.
Thanks
Steve

I didn't heard of XP Home SE but anyway you should be able to load XP pro "over" it I mean to upgrade or do a clean install witout any problems!!!

Well I have to be sure of this. It is a business system it has to be done on.
XP Home was loaded and I then loaded the XP SE cd when it was released by Microsoft.
Thanks

I originally had XP home version and when I got XP pro version I just used the XP pro disk and loaded it, and it updated my xp home version to pro and I did not loose anything, but I do not believe that is the answer to your problem. It really sounds like driver problems, or possibly bad USB ports..

First thing is to be sure USB ports are enabled in the BIOS and then in windows device manager see if all is well there.. You should see USB root hub and no yellow checkmarks or red X's..

Yes I did that... all looks good....
Then I plug in a printer and I get a yellow question mark... a window never comes up to start identifing new hardware.... I even tried rebooting with new device on.

Many times for USB devices you load the software first than plug in the device when it asks you to of after loading the software and rebooting. I assume you have your USB listed in device manager and all looks well??

Since your device is showing up in device manager with the yellow mark, wimdows does see it, so try loading the software first, reboot, then plug device in. I know thats how I had to do my printer..

Yes, I did that... the software is installed but still no printer.
this is very frustrating.

It really does sound like something wrong with USB drivers, You may be right in that installing XP pro will fix things simply because of the fact that it will redo drivers..
