one computer left out of the loop

We installed DSL on our office peer-to-peer network yesterday, and everyone is happy as can be, except for one computer. It's running win98se, like most of the rest. It was the computer that had dial-up access to AOL, which the rest of us shared via ICS.
The dsl router/modem is plugged into an ethernet switch, not into one of the computers.
I uninstalled AOL & ICS, in fact have uninstalled and reinstalled all network adapters a couple of times today.
I can ping the rest of the network by IP and by name, but can't share files. Nobody's running a firewall, though there is 1 computer running xp pro (firewall turned off), and the router has a firewall.
Any ideas?

In Internet Options / Connections / Lan Settings what does this PC show?

It's set to automatically detect settings.
I managed to get some network drives mapped, using NET USE.
Everything's working, for now-- unfortunately I have to install AOL 9.0 & that created mayhem yesterday. :(

Why do you need to install AOL? I'd avoid that at all costs! If you just need access to your AOL mail boxes, use the "back door" - aol.com. You don't need aol software to access their web site. Also, with the NAT firewall from the router, don't think it's necessary to run firewalls on any of the other machines. Just redundancy and sucks up system resources.

I hate AOL passionately but I'm just doing as I'm told, ma'am.
Aside from the email address being on all the business stationery, etc., I think the only real argument that "they" can present for keeping AOL is that we can download the email & save it. Wait, that isn't a real argument :p
I'm looking into Eudora or something like that to counter that argument.
A certain paranoia and resistance to change in the environment...hence also the firewalls.
