Longhorn and WinXp64 bit are coming out soon. Both 64Bit OSes are similar in my mind because all the good Longhorn functions have been shafted for the release. Which one will you guys get/ think will be better?

Win64 is free! Why not as long as I can still run all my programs on it?

I wont be upgrading until I see some 64 bit applications worth buying...and that won't be for quite some time. Someone else can be the 64 bit guinea pig for now.

OS X 10.4(Tiger)... Oh... that's not an option... Well for this PC, I don't see it moving to any new OS anytime soon...

No check block for none of the above.

How would one go at obtaining a free win64 version? I just bought my OEM XP Home copy, but I'm interested in the upgrade :)

I'm gonna mark another in the "not upgrading any time soon" column. I'm perfectly happy with the setup I have and in my opinion, WinXP is perfect for me the way it is.

When I finally do move to a 64bit system, I will most likely go with WinXP 64, only because Longhorn is going to be such a resource hog. Yeah sure, Longhorn is all pretty and fancy, but I don't need/want pretty and fancy, I want an OS that will support what I'm doing and run smoothly.

Me too. No plans to upgrade to XP64 and Longorn that fast. Will upgrade OS when I buy a new PC maybe in 2006.

Neither. Longhorn looks to be a hardware hog, that just put Desktop X into thier GUI, and Im not interested in 64 bit anything so Microsoft wont be getting my money. I predict that longhorn will go the way of WindowsME and the OS that Longhorn was supposed to be will come out in a later rendition that will actually be called a better name then longhorn. What in the world would inspire anyone to buy an OS named after a Cow?

I will consider the choice only when Longhorn matures. No point trying to compare 2 OS' that are in different degrees of development.

FWIW Longhorn is quite nice, I see no performance drop between XP and Longhorn running the same hardware (dualboot). The GUI may look very rich, but they've done a really good job so far.

I won't buy them yet either, don't feel the need. I havent even bought a 64 bit chip yet, I hear they are peppy but, I like what I have now.

I like mature OS's like win98SE and Now WinXP SP2, is just about there.

I'm with the majority on this one. "Mature" operating system usually means after the release of the first Service Pack! Think I'll give MS time to fix the presently unknown issues before I become part of the error-reporting-lab-rats!

I'm planning on replacing my 1.3 GHz Athlon T-bird-based PC with a new Athlon 64-bit-based PC soon, and thus I will probably be getting Windows 64 bit. But I thought Longhorn was still a couple years away; is it really coming out soon?

I know longhorn is awhile off but I thought it would be nice to see the differing opinions on what they think of the OSes so far. WinXp 64Bit is being released soon?

I'll stick with this configuration a bit longer !!! not yet ready for big changes if you know what I mean "lol" !!!
But if I can choose I would choose Longhorn!!! ;)

We'll be upgrading the studio to a 64bit system soon as well as adding a G5 Mac. But at home, I'll stick with WinXP Pro - it does just fine and I don't see the need for another upgrade anytime soon. So count me in with the majority.

I'm sticking with what I have until it's ready. I'll let others do the experimenting. I didn't upgrade to XP til after service pack 2.

I'm still interested in the upgrade, but I was wondering what the conditions for a free upgrade were.

None of the above. Windows 2000 Pro still serves my needs quite well, thank you.

Perhaps, that will be the version they put on Gateway Computers.

Myself, no update plans. Win2000 and winXP serve me well for now. Actually I could still do what I do with win98.

Hopefully i'll have my 64 bit system by the end of this month. I'll probly be using XP64 on it.
Also i've seen mention of It being free. I've read in a couple of articles that MS will be giving free copies to people that have a legit XP Pro. So I guess that means you'll have to turn in XP Pro to get XP Pro 64.

Yuanji

i wonder if they give you XP home 64bit if you have a legit copy of winxp home

digitalfreedom64

I believe that there will only be 64bit versions of XP Pro and Windows Server. Then I think all versions of Longhorn will have 32 and 64 bit versions.

I read too that Win XP64 will be free. I assume (and I hate to do that) that you will need to send in your origional XP CD to get the free copy, but I am not really sure. When I build my next system I will be using XP64. And also from what I read, XP64 will be PRO XP64. I don't think they plan on releasing a home version. I just left ME last fall for XP Pro. And what a big difference it is. And alot better as well. Not any crashes yet...

I'll be riding it out for as long as possible. Until then, I'm tooling around with MEPIS.

Well, for now, since im happy with the stability, and comfort of XP, i may stick with that for awhile, and since I hear I can trade my 32-bit XP for 64-bit for free (or something like that), that kind of sweetens the deal abit.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL US!!!??!!! Where can we get the 64 bit winxp pro upgrade for free? OR ... is it even free? The beta test version is free, if you want to be a tester, but the upgrade will be for "sale" just like any other upgrade.
