Today I decided to do a regular clean up of my daughters PC. One of the first things I do is a spyware sweep. My two programs of choice have always been Ad-Aware, and Spybot. Each time before runing the scans, I check for updates of each.. It seems that lately Ad-ware never has any updates available (nothing new) so on to scaning I go.. After it is complete it only finds 4. Then on to Spybot, First up is to see if any updates are available. Lately it always has updates available.. After downloading the updates off to scaning we go. When it was finished it found 54 such spyware on her syste. It seems that Ad-aware is findling less and less each time, were Spybot is finding more.
My overall choice for spyware programs would have to be Spbot.. What has happened to Adware? They use to be good, but lately I'm not to sure..

Both, but if I had to use only one, it would be AdAware SE. On the last several machinces I've used them on, AdAware found far more than SpyBot did.

I use both adaware and spybot. I've also tested an online spyware scanner (listed in my recent spyware article on the mech), and am also cautiously using MS's Anit-Spyware.

I just run both spybot and adaware and they seem to find everything.

I noticed that there are new definitions available for Ad-Aware as of the 30th, I think the last definition updates for Spybot were on the 19th.
Another program that I use is javacool software's SpywareBlaster. I also have Microsoft Anti-Spyware installed, but I don't use it very often.

Just a note on this -- if you read the article, it says that Giant AntiSpyware is the most effective of all the programs. Microsoft bought Giant, and the Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta is actually a rebadged Giant AntiSpyware.

That information was pointed out in the article:Howes's tests were conducted before the Microsoft Corp. announced in December that it was purchasing Giant Company Software outright. For that reason, the tests use the version of Giant AntiSpyware that was available in October and not the newer Microsoft beta version that's currently available.
Even so, with Giant's application removing 63% of a PC's adware components, and its nearest competitor, Webroot Spy Sweeper, removing less than 50%, it's clear that Microsoft has a potential winner on its hands.

That's what I get when I don't RTFA. Ironic because I said I did earlier.

Then you still have Ad-Aware 6, which was replaced by Ad-Aware 1.x SE almost a year ago. Time to uninstall it and install the new program. Also make sure you are using Spybot S&D 1.3, and keep an eye out for 1.4 which is in beta.

I use both Ad-Aware SE and Spybot: Search & Destroy...but I rely more on spyware blockers to help keep the junk off my computer in the first place. Currently, I use SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, a HOSTS file, IE Spyad and a Block List file and Cookie Wall. When I perform my weekly scans with Ad-Aware SE and Spybot most of the time they come up clean...I might get a few spyware items per month, but I haven't had any real performance issues (from spyware messing up my computers) since I started using those blockers last year.

i use both, i hardly ever get spybot to update, it seems like it only has new stuff once a month, adaware on the other hand, at least once a week.....when i first started using adaware, last year, it had updates like every day......i used the trial for spysweeper, and loved it, it picked up a trojan that norton a/v 2005 didnt.....i gotta buy that, thanx for reminding me

I used to use both but now I use none . Im going out on a limb and using the MS antispyware beta and relying on the SP2 firewall . In conjunction with AVG free I think ill be ok ehehhe

Just remember, Propain, there is no outbound protection from Win's firewall. I sure like the feeling of being notified when something tries to get out, and I didn't ask it to!

I'm wondering why this myth continues to perpetuate. Windows XP SP1's ICF did not offer outbound protection. However, the Windows Firewall in SP2 does have it. You can see this when you get a box like the one I've attached. You get these boxes only in programs that do things like try to check for updates or otherwise send out data.

I use Ad-aware, Spybot S & D, Microsoft Antispyware, HJT, CWShredder, and SpywareBlaster, Norton AV, and ZA. So far everything is running smoothly. Nice link Force Flow on the HJT Log Tutorial I now understand the program much better.
