Hiya folks,
I'm going to be cleaning up a friends system this weekend for him and by what he has described has has A LOT of junk (spyware, malware, trojans, etc...) on his PC. One thing for sure is he has the about:blank hijack and I have never had to remove this before so I'm wondering what the best method is. I've seen some pages (googled) that explain a manual method that seems extremely complex, and other pages say that there are scans that will find and remove it.

Anyone have a tried and true tested way of getting rid of about:blank?

By the way, I will probably be posting a HijackThis log tonight or tomorrow as well to get some help cleaning this junk up. I don't do it often because I tend to be proactive and keep my system sparkling clean. This guy has never even heard of Adaware or Spybot!!

Thanks very much for any help you can provide,
Stryker :)

Been real pleased with the capabilities of Microsoft's Anti-spyware product. It can restore your browser to it's original settings and also offers Realtime protection. So far it has worked much better than either Spybot or Adaware for me. Probably would start out with it and see what it does. If it doesn't clean it, go to the others, followed by Hijackthis and CWShredder, followed by a manual cleaning if necessary.

it depends on what varient you have whether the scanners weill work
there is no one way to get rid of it. depend on what varient you have

some varients evolve like the Se.dll varient

and this varient .
res://C:\WINDOWS\system\cqzdr.dll/sp.html#44768

some that start hiding super hidden files. or the only way to fix it is to go into the registry change some permisions so it will release the file then changing the permissions back.

but i would start out with A:B, cwshredder, microsofts antispware, and adaware. download them all and run each one

without a hjt log i can't tell you how to manually do it like i said some varients are different from each other and so are the fixes as far as what OS your using.

There's a program that guarantees to be able to get about:blank out of your system. May cost you money in the long run, but the initial scan is free. I've had good luck with it on a couple of machines now. Adware Away (http://www.adwareaway.com/list.htm) As Lobos says, I have had to resort to Registry Editing with a custom editor in order to get rid of it on other occassions.

OK... thanks for the info guys.
I will run all the scans as recommended and get it as clean as I can before I post a HT log. I actually haven't tried MS's Anit-Spyware software as of yet so this will be a good introduction to it.

I'm sure I'll have a HT log for you tonight or tomorrow and thanks for the help already!

Hi guys,
Well, I've done a bunch of clean up (although it may not look like it) and here is the resulting log. From what I have seen, this system was (and still is) absolutely riddled with junk. I am unfamiliar with some of the software on this Dell Dimension 2400 so I haven't stopped the processes I'm unsure of. Sorry if it's a little cluttered, but let me know if there's something I can do to make it easier (it's my first HJT log). :)

Thanks again for all the help guys... it's very much appreciated!

Hi Stryker

We'll need to download a 'domains' fixing tool from WinHelp2002:

1) Right-click DelDomains.inf (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf) and select "Save Target As", then select and save it to your "Desktop".
2) Right-click on the downloaded file, and select "Install".

reboot

Note: if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
==========================

First, create a folder for HijackThis in the root folder of your hard drive so it can make proper backups

example

C:/HJT/
C:/hijackthis/

next

Click here (http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) to download Hijack This. 1.99.1 Save it to the folder you have just created

Close all open windows and open HIJACK THIS. Click “Scan” . When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to“Save Log”. Click on“Save Log” and save it to NotePad. Copy the entire log and paste it here.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET , most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed. Wait for someone to analyze the scan and advise.

==========================

Download: "StartDreck", from here:
http://www.niksoft.at/_data/startdreck.zip

Unzip to its own folder and start the program,
Press 'Config'
Press 'Unmark All'
Check the following boxes only:
Registry -> Run Keys
System/drivers> Running processes
Press 'Ok'
Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file
(default is the same folder as the application)

Please post the log in this thread.
and post the hijackthis log with the new version

Hiya Lobos,
First off, thanks for taking the time to help me!

I downloaded and installed the domains fixing tool, followed by a reboot. I have also downloaded the new HijackThis from your link and run it (log below). The link for "StartDreck" doesn't seem to work though (says unavailable/can't be found). I tried a right click/save target as... and left click, but no luck.

Also, this is probably relavent to something here as I can't access "My Computer", Recycle Bin, Control Panel, anything using windows explorer. I actually had to start HijackThis using the command prompt!

Thanks again!!
Stryker :)

Ok well it seems we don't need it now

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's
anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers
when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is
enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When
you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system
folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use
or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we
think is bad to keep).
===============

We'll need to download these program(s) to help us deal with the "About:Blank" infection:

-

Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder (http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html) and run it, then:

1. Click "Check For Update"

(If an update isn't available, skip to step #4.)

2. Click "Click here to Download the upate".
3. When the new version has been downloaded, click "Save".
4. Exit the program.

-Download, unzip to your desktop About:Buster (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4289.html) and run it, then:

1. Click "Update".
2. Click "Check For Update"

(If no new version is available, skip to step #4.)

3. Click "Download Update", and wait for it to be installed.
4. Exit the program.

Click here (http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150#) To download Adaware SE 1.05 And set up Adaware per instructions there
Do not run yet

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html) and follow these steps:

Step 1:

Click on start, then control panel, then administrative programs, then services. Look for a service called <Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper >. Double click on the that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. then click apply - OK
Note: Pleas do not stop these they look alike "Remote Procedure Call" or "Remote Procedure Call locator" just the one that has helper at the end

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following: if they exist

C:\WINDOWS\system32\addij32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winws.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\qrxcv.dll/sp.html#10001
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\qrxcv.dll/sp.html#10001

O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3sj32.exe" /s (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\addij32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winws.exe
C:\WINDOWS\qrxcv.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\javakz.dll

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad. Name the file as resfix.reg. Change the Save as Type to All Files, Save this file on the desktop. Please DO NOT include the word QUOTE when saving the file.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_11Fßä #•ºÄÖ`I]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\11Fßä #•ºÄÖ`I]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\11Fßä #•ºÄÖ`I]

Now double-click on the resfix.reg file and when it prompts to merge, say Yes. This will clear some registry entries left behind by the malware infections.

Double-click on CWShredder.exe to open it, click the 'Fix->' button (not 'Scan Only') and you'll be prompted that CWShredder will shutdown any Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player windows, click OK to continue and let it run completely to delete anything it finds. After its scan, click Next, then Exit.

Double click on aboutbuster.exe. When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for malware files.

and run ad-aware with the custom settings

Now rebootand post your Hijack this log along with your aboutbuster logs

Hiya Lobos,
System is running MUCH better and I can now access Windows Explorer and Control Panel and all that stuff that wasn't accessible before. Standard homepage came up after reboot as well, not about:blank... (insert giggling here). :D

Log looks clean...great job!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=63)

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=56)

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=405)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=60)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=43)

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=48)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=49)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
