View Full Version : Record a musical instrument to the hard drive

I was approached by a person I work with the other day asking me how would he record his guitar music on to the hard drive of his computer I wasn't too sure if he needed a special program to do this or not,,,, any suggestions

Does his computer have a sound card?

The direct way is to connect the guitar to the Line-in or Mic-in of the sound card. just get a 1/8" to 1/4" patch cord, and connect it up. Usually it works okay. you can also get certain USB interface devices that you can connect a guitar too, such as the GuitarPort. They come with some pretty cool Amplifier emulation software

If he wants a simple, yet effective recording program, he should try Audacity. its free, and works pretty well for line-in recording. But for heavy recording projects he'd have to look for something bigger.
