Hi moonlight burner,
.dat files are just generic files used by most programs to store data. By default they should not be associated with any program. Hope that helps.
I associate with notepad so I can look at them but no association is needed for programs to use them.
Other files in the same catagory are .dbf .ini ...

Speaking of notepad...
I use this (http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/40/) little registry hack:
Enabling this setting will allow you to use Notepad to open a file by simply right clicking on the icon. Also the Notepad will be used to open the files by default if no association already exists.
Very useful.

Don't screw with those .dat files too much unless you know what you are doing. User.dat and system.dat are registry files and other.dat files are sometimes required for some programs to run.
