View Full Version : Your favourite BEER

In honour of the International Beer Night run in my bar tonight, where I was unfortunate enough to drink some US rubbish, I'd like to ask what everyone's favourite beer is, and what temperature it is drank at. I don't care about favourite alcoholic beverage, that was done a few nights ago.
Personally, I'm a big fan of slightly chilled Guinness when drank in the UK, but in Australia my favourite would have to be cool (not cold) Tiger beer, or cold Carlton Colds.

Jagg,
Your right about American beer being rubbish. It's pretty much tasteless and and flavorless and the head looks more like the foam from a can of Coca-Cola. I like Steinlager (German), Sing Tao (Thailand) and Anchor Steam (American-an exception) To be fair to American beers, there are pleanty of excellent micro brews all over the states and most are sold locally and probably not exported to the land of Oz. What I meant by rubbish are the mass produced light american pilsners such as Budweiser and Coors...those are truly trash beers. Nothing more than a cheap high for many Americans. Its interesting to note that the cheap pilsners are made in a few hours and during the brewing process carbonation is injected into the "beer". The alcohol is added as well...its not even real beer!
Cheers to ya mate! or as the Danes say: "Skoal!"

NONE!!... I personally think beer is a really disgusting tasting thing and have no idea why anyone would wanna drink the crap for any other reason than it's a cheap drunk. I've never understood why people refer to a beer as being "sweet" as it has to be the most disgusting liquid (tied with coffee) that I have ever tasted leaving a bitter after taste that just seems to linger for ever.

:D That phrase always cracks me up. Why would I want to aquire a taste for something I find revolting? I've always wondered why people continue to drink something they don't like (most people I have ever talked to say the same thing... they hated it when they tried it). I suppose if I stabbed myself in the arm enough times, I would get used to it and it wouldn't really hurt anymore.

Guiness

I agree with Doc on the Guiness and Ciders, most of the lager type beers sold in the UK are known as Euro Fizz and they are dreadfull, one particular blend called "Carling Black Label" even managed to earn the title "diesel" I don't know why, but it is a particularly nasty concoction.
Having travelled in Germany and Northern Europe quite a bit I must say that the local beers are always good and back home in Cardiff our own localy brewed "Brains Dark or Brains SA" will give Guiness a run for it's money.
Brains SA or Special Ale to give it full name once appeared in the Guiness book of records as the strongest beer in the world, hence the reason locals refer to it as "Skull Attack" rather than Special Ale.
Down here in PR we get the usual mass produced American garbage, like Bud and Coors and they also have their own local nasty called Medallia.
So when I can get it I drink ice cold Michelob imported from Spain, its not too bad, but it's a lot better than the other stuff.
Doc.... if you ever get the chance to visit the UK you should make the Bulmers factory in Herefordshire where they make Strongbow (and do conducted tours) a must on your itinerary.

After Great Britain's Beer Festival...
After Great Britain's Beer Festival, all the brewery presidents decided it would be fun to hit a pub in London and go out for a beer.
The first sits down and says, "Hey, Señor, I would like the world's best beer, a Corona."
The bartender dusts off a bottle from the shelf and gives it to him.
The second says, "I'd like the best beer in the world. Give me 'The King of Beers.' One Budweiser please."
The bartender gives him one.
Another guy says, "I'd like the only beer made with Rocky Mountain spring water; give me a Coors."
The bartender gives him one.
The guy from Guiness sits down as he orders a Coke. The bartender is a bit taken aback, but gives him what he ordered.
The other presidents look over at him and ask, "Why aren't you drinking a Guiness?"
The Guiness president replies, "Well, if you guys aren't drinking beer, neither will I."

Do the English really drink their beer room temp? Many here mention how great English beer is and all this time I thought German beer was king, speaking of which I read once which countries drank the most beer per capita but I can't find it now, thought it was Germany, but maybe by the way y'all talking might be England.

Heineken straight from the brewery is far far better than the export gunk, as is the story with Guinness. The further from the brewery, the worse it gets. KiwiPCman, you drink Vic Bitter?? You know what VB stands for don't you?? ;)
I drink it too, I like it. And beer isn't an acquired taste for me... I either like it or I don't, if I don't I won't drink it. I agree that there's no point acquiring a taste for the point of it. When I was in the UK I made a beer diary, I made a point of travelling to as many different pubs to sample all their beers... a lot were gopping, but some were luverly jubbly. I like Fullers in the UK as well.
I like YingLueng. I believe its spelled that way, but not sure. Im not old enough to drink and havent tryed many types of beers, but that my favorite of what I have tryed.

I mostly prefer handcrafted beer from brew-pubs. I especially like when they do seasonals. The single best beer I ever had in my life was from a brew-pub in Nashville, it was called a Cask Conditioned Porter, it was served at room temperature.
I also enjoy the beers from Unibroue. My favotite being La Fin du Monde (http://www.unibroue.com/products/fin.cfm).
With all that being said though, nothing beats an ice cold Schlitz. Im not talking about the Schlitz Malt Liqour swill, but the good ole' fashioned kind.

Beer is never served at room temperature. Some beers are served at cellar temperature which I believe is 45-50F. This is common for European ales, bitters, stouts, lambics (anything that isn't cold fermented really). Most lagers are served at a cooler temperature of about 34-38F. I think a lot of the serving temperature has to do with where the flavor comes from. Most lagered beers rely on hops as the main flavor component whereas warm fermented beers rely more upon the malt for flavor. The more bitter lagered beers taste better at a colder temp than the sweeter ales and such.
I usually drink whatever the local flavor is. I think you get a better feeling for the location if you submerge yourself in the local flavor. That being said, my favorite beer by far is Orval. It is a Belgian trappist ale that has no rival.
Although England and Germany both make good beers, the true home of beer is Belgium. They take their beer seriously enough that they have a different glass for almost every beer they brew just to make sure you get the right nose from it.

You need to take this more seriously and realize that what you did was a HUGE mistake and never do it again. If you wanna brag about drinking and driving, do it to the folks in prison that already tried it. I wonder if the guy who killed my grandfather while drunk driving thought it was funny too.

Why can't you learn from other peoples mistakes and just not drink and drive KNOWING already that it's a bad idea. What a completely backwards way of thinking you have here!

The "legal limit" for those under drinking age in Maryland is 0.02. So if you were pulled over here, you'd be in handcuffs.
Since we're a computer site, I'll draw a parallel to computers: drinking and driving -- no matter how drink or sober you are -- is like running your computer with a bad PSU. Sure, you might be able to get home all right (or run your computer all right with the PSU), but there's that chance that you won't, and the outcome could be disasterous. It's better to stay stone sober if you're going to drive, just as it's better to use a quality PSU. ;)
I'm under drinking age, but I don't intend to drink even when I do turn 21. My family has had too many problems with drinking and other kinds of substance abuse -- I think the best route is to try no drug with potential effects any worse than caffeine. After all, caffeine can be bad for you, but it's usually bad for you alone, and it's not nearly as bad for you as other drugs can be.
And that's why Mountain Dew is my "beer" of choice. :D

They served it in a tall tumbler made of very thick glass that helped to keep it cold, drinking from the bottle was unheard of in those days.

I've no worries about the thread hijacking wrt drink driving... it's something that needs to be addressed in the same breath as drinking. When I'm driving, I'll have a beer or two to be sociable, but never within 2 hours of me going to drive. That means that ideally my body will have processed it and I'll be at 0.00. However, I read an interesting article that said even when you're at 0.00 BAC you're still adversely affected. In summary, maturity when drinking is important. If you have alcohol in your system, you're adversely affected, and putting others in danger. Imagine your family is on the road that night... would you risk injuring them because you wanted to drink??
Back on track... I hated Guinness is Australia, I thought that people who drank it were just being pretentious wankers. However, my uncle drank it when I visited him in the UK, and by God does it taste better. Stella tastes great from the bottle even in Australia rjf, and that's saying something as most foreign beers don't travel well. For instance, Labatts ends up tasting like Strongbow cider IMO. But drinking Stella on tap in the UK was brilliant, it's definitely a top beer
Goose Island Honker's Ale. This is a Chicago microbrew, but they are working on getting a 7 state distribution now. If I *have* to drink a mainstream American lager, give me MGD. Someone already mentioned Anchor Steam - that stuff is good too.

The reason that I don't drink is because I like drive, my friends are your typical stupid drunks, they get way drunker than they have to be, and then do stupid things, but one stupid thing that they will never do, because of me, is to drink and drive. I would drive 100 miles if I had to, just as long as I knew my friends were home safe instead of being on the roads where they could potential kill themselves and kill others. I like it because I know that I can have a good time and am able to drive home safe, go to bed and have a great sleep, and wake up the morning ready to start a new day :D.
