RAID stands for Redundant array of Independant Disks, and it's basically just a way to have 1 or more other harddrives in addition the your main one be always backing themselves up with what is being written on the main drive so if the main drive fails you have instant spare harddrive to use already loaded and ready to go with no data loss.
You just need a board with a RAID controller, you install your main drive and at least 1 drive on the raid controller and go into the RAID setup and set it up to do it's thing. There are several options of which I am not real up on since the last time I studied them was for A+ exam but havn't used them since even though I do have a board with Raid. You can use it just for more drives in your system too without using RAID functions.

Do you need to have 2 HDDs?

I thought you can do it with partitions. The main purpose of RAID is BACKUP. Is that so?

Yes it's for backing up a harddrive in case of catastrophic failure, but as far as I know you need minimum of 2 harddrives, a primary drive and the raid drive that will be the backup drive that will be the one on the raid controller. I could be wrong though because I am not that well versed in RAID.

There are several different types of RAID, and they all require at LEAST 2 physical drives. If you search the forums, you will find a LOT of threads discussing RAID.
