I was planning on adding a server to my network in my basement and was wondering what the best way to set the network up would be.

Should I have the cable modem connected directly to a router and plug the server into one of the ports on the router, then use the other ports to wire access points to the other areas of the house to extend the connection? Would that be the best way to go.

Would all the computers automatically switch from one connection to the other, when moving around the house?

Would I be able to setup WEP and WAP on all the access points?

I was looking at the Linksys WRT54GS. Has anyone had any experience with it?

If you use the WRT54GS, that's already wireless and MAY be able to service the whole house wirelessly, depending on many factors. Yes, I'd connect the server to it with a cable, and wire ALL feasible computers. Only use wireless where you can't run a cable or for laptops. There are ways to extend the range of the wireless - antennas, bridges, repeaters. Cross that bridge when you get there. If you want a really high powered router, look at the Linksys WRT54GX and its matching PCMCIA cards, but bring a FAT wallet.

I already have wireless router, but I wanted to update it as it is an older model, and there are many losses in connection.

I will try the router out first, and if I had any problem with the signal, I would add a high gain antenna first.

Also, what about the VPN router. I know the price, but it would be useful to connect from outside the network.
