The slave is just what the second drive on the same ide channel as the master is called and the function is to give you more harddrive space..

a slave hard drive allows you to use RAID (RAID.com for info) and it is sort of for extra memory or in my case (which happened in my computer case hahah) I used a slave drive for excel and programs like that and i still wanted to keep my existing drive so I made the new drive a slave. first step- buy or find or get a extra hard drive (make sure you have room for it on the middle of an IDE cable it normally has a little thing that says slave)
step 2- pull out a little prong cove on the back and look either on the top or bottom of the hard drive for a mark that says slave and points to a set of prongs then place the rubber cover onto those two prongs
step 3- place the hard drive in a tray that will make the IDE cable able to go to the hard drive then to the other or whatever you have on the master part
step 4- put the IDE and power cable into the matching slots on the hard drive or do step 4 then 3 which ever is easier
step 5-put the case back together go to the start menu, settings, control panel, add hardware and then it has some easy step by step instructions
and there you go you have a master and slave hard drive!

Just set the jumpers on both drives to CS(cable select) provided you are using 80 wire cables and connect your existing drive to the end and the slave to the middle. Once you boot into windows you can go to disc management and format it from there. After you format it you can install programs or just use it for extra storage. I use mine to back up my important files as well as storage for thousands of pictures.

I believe you need a RAID controller for RAID, I have never seen RAID used with just IDE master and slave drives in the same IDE channel..

Come to think of it, what does slaving a hard drive to an existing hard drive have anything to do with RAID anyway?

can't have raid without 2 or more HDDs

But the original poster didn't ask about RAID.

It was stated above by another that a slave drive is for RAID, and I was just conveying the fact that I do not believe that is truly the case as I do believe you need a RAID controler and RAID BIOS on your motherboard to use raid and even then your raid drives are not slaves to the master C: drive...
