CD-rom bad or good?

Hello to all, new wanna be computer builder here. This is my first.
I have a new mother board (DFI Lanparty UT 250GB), new CPU is (AMD 16 Athlon), new hard drive (WD 36 GB 10k SATA) and Windows 2000 not yet installed.
I am using the exsisting CD rom, (98 Gateway) that used to work fine until I put all the components together, now it isn't recognised by the mother board?
In my Bios, it shows up as Mat****a DVD-rom SR-8, so it is being noticed, but when I go to IDE HDD auto-detection, it comes up empty?
So, I thought I would attach it to the primary IDE plug.....same thing?
Why is it not being recognised? I cannot install drivers or anything to my new hard drive without it.
Antec performer SOHO case.
Please point me in the right direction, crane mechanic by trade, what can I say?

Autodetection I don't think will pick up optical drives, just hard disk drives. I would recommend plugging the CD-ROM into the secondary IDE cable at the end. Have the jumper on the back of the drive on either Master or Cable Select. HTH

If the bios sees it and your bios is set to boot from CD first, it should work. Put the 2000 CD in the drive and boot it up.
