My computer is set up with the optical drives set as master and slave with an 80 wire cable (pluged into secondary on motherboard). Since the 80 wire cable has master and slave markings on it could my computer run better if I changed the optical drives to cable select?

Does it work better if the DVD drive is master or if the CD-RW drive is master? Or does it not matter?

Some say there is a slight performance increase when locating the burner as the master on the secondary ide. With today's powerful computers, I don't think you'll see a difference. Either Master/Slave or CS will work fine. On my customer builds, I use 40 wire ide cables and Master/Slave jumpering or an 80 wire with CS for opticals.

Some opticals prefer 40 wire cables and master/slave jumpering. If you do use 80 wire, use cable select. Which drive is which shouldn't matter.

Thanks for the advice glc. You realy know your stuff. My computer came new from the factory not configured as well as you could have done it because they used 80 wire cables on the opticals set as master & slave instead of cable select. Ohter mistakes they made were having the optical drives plugged in to the primary on the mother board when it should have been plugged in to the secondary (you told me) and they had the cpu fan plugged into the wrong connector on the mother board. After I plugged it into the right connection the cpu fan speed sensor statred working.

Next time I upgrade I am going to definately build my own computer with help from www.PCMECH.com.
